This entry describes the components of the surface energy balance (SEB) over snow and ice: shortwave and longwave radiation, the turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent heat, and the subsurface (conductive) heat flux. If the surface is melting, the sum of these fluxes determines the melt rate.

Mapping potential energy surfaces
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2004A recently proposed dynamical method [A. Laio and M. Parrinello, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 99, 12562 (2002)] allows us to globally sample the free energy surface. This approach uses a coarse-grained non-Markovian dynamics to bias microscopic atomic trajectories.

We discuss the concept of the surface energy of a solid. Our point of view is that the surface enrgy, as classically defined, is but one attribute of a more general distance-dependent interaction between bodies. We argue that the mechanics of adhesion and fracture of solids can be correctly modeled by the incorporation of classical surface energy into ...

An analytical model is developed for calculation of the surface energy of a nanowire based on thermodynamics and continuum medium mechanics. The core-shell structure and the outer surface skin of the nanowire are considered for the one-dimensional nanostructure and contributions from chemical and structural effects to the surface energy are discussed ...

Experimental determination of surface energy for high-energy surface: A review
Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2023The experimental determination of surface free energy is of great importance for engineering applications. However, there is no universal, reliable, and convenient measurement means to achieve experimental determination of solid surface energy for high-energy surface.
