Automated surface finishing using industrial robots requires good understanding of the pressure distribution between the compliant tools and workpieces. For abrasive belts, the contact is essentially between the rubber contact wheel and the workpiece surface. This paper investigates the pressure distribution with respect to different applying loads and

Surface finishing of dental porcelain
The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 1981Abstract A technique is presented to polish a porcelain surface whose natural glaze has been broken by grinding. The technique involves the use of a hard rubber wheel, fine wet pumice, and wet tin oxide. A comparison of the polished and naturally glazed porcelain surfaces of vacuum-fired porcelain appear similar both clinically and under an SEM.

Surface finish measurements are usually fitted to models of the finish correlation function which are parametrized in terms of root-mean-square roughnesses, delta, and correlation lengths, l. Highly finished optical surfaces, however, are frequently better described by fractal models, which involve inverse power-law spectra and are parametrized by ...

Optical control of surface finish
Optics and Lasers in Engineering, 1999Abstract Measurement of surface roughness on mechanical components, which may incorporate also critical profiles, using diffused light techniques is a very complex problem. This paper describes a new optoelectronic device employing a diode laser and an array of discrete photodetectors placed on an arc of circle and interfaced with a data acquisition ...

Surface Finish and Surface Integrity
1989Abstract This article distinguishes between a surface finish and a surface texture. It provides information on the surface integrity technology that describes and controls the many possible alterations produced in a surface layer during manufacture, including their effects on material properties and the performance of the surface in ...
