From Damage to Functionality: Remanufacturing of Thrust Roller Bearings by Tailored Forming

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, the wear and fatigue behavior of repaired bearing raceways with a new powder alloy is investigated using a FE8 test‐rig and an oscillating tribometer. The tests are compared with industrial manufactured bearings to evaluate the repair quality. The repair can extend the service life of the repaired bearing to that of a new bearing and improves ...

Friction behavior of laser cladding magnesium alloy against AISI 52100 steel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The use of magnesium alloys in engineering applications is becoming increasingly important as a relatively low density allows savings in energy consumption and therefore reduction in air pollution.

SiO2-nanocomposite film coating of CAD/CAM composite resin blocks improves surface hardness and reduces susceptibility to bacterial adhesion.

open access: yesDental materials journal, 2017
Composite resin blocks for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) applications have recently become available. However, CAD/CAM composite resins have lower wear resistance and accumulate more plaque than CAD/CAM ceramic materials ...

Zr3O-ZrC/graphene strengthened layer directly prepared on the surface of metal Zr by plasma heat treatment

open access: yesJournal of Aeronautical Materials, 2020
Zr3O-ZrC/graphene composite layer was directly in-situ grown on the surface of Zr foil by plasma heat treatment method. The microstructure and component of the as-prepared sample were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman ...

SURFACES OF HARD-SPHERE SYSTEMS

open access: yesImage Analysis & Stereology, 2014
In various situations surfaces appear that are formed by systems of hard spheres. Examples are porous layers as surfaces of sand heaps and biofilms or fracture surfaces of concrete. The present paper considers models where a statistically homogeneous system of hard spheres with random radii is intersected by a plane and the surface is formed by the ...

A Novel Approach to Produce Metal–Metal Composites by Leveraging Immiscibility: Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Nanosilver‐Dispersed Titanium

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Incorporating nanosized silver into titanium for antimicrobial materials exploits the metastable miscibility gap between silver and titanium. Silver nanoparticles are synthesized via pulsed laser ablation in liquid. Silver addition refines the microstructure, increases hardness by 30%, and reduces Staphylococcus capitis microbial adhesion by 70%, with ...

Estimation of hardness by nanoindentation of rough surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research, 1998
The roughness of a surface influences the surface mechanical properties, estimated using nanoindentation data. Assuming a relation between the penetration depth normalized with respect to a roughness scale parameter, and the effective radius encountered by the indenter, a first order model of roughness dependency of hardness is proposed.

Maillard Type Reaction for Electroless Copper Plating onto Ceramic Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents the manufacturing of copper‐plated ceramic nanoparticles in an environmentally friendly way. Supported by organic functionalizations with pectin an electroless plating step can be performed. Sustainable reagents like xylose, and several amino acids are used for the reduction process.
