DURING research on the contact of solid surfaces we have been examining the deformation under load of single asperities. These are formed by turning cones of base diameter about 0.2 mm on metal surfaces and are pressed against a hard anvil under known loads. The resulting flats are examined by relocation profilometry1 and by optical microscopy.

A Hard Look at Running Surfaces
The Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1990If running were controlled by OSHA, it probably would be banned. A runner hits the ground with a force of three to five times his or her body weight-a shock that is repeated over and over until the run ends. The type of surface can play a critical role in lessening the shock and therefore the risk of injury.

Rainfastness and adsorption of herbicides on hard surfaces
Pest Management Science, 2005AbstractHerbicides are still used to control weeds on hard surfaces, including municipal, private and industrial sites. Used under unfavourable conditions, especially when rain occurs shortly after application, herbicides may run off to surface waters. Such losses of herbicides from hard surfaces are estimated to be much higher than for herbicides used

Deposition of hard surfacing layer by friction surfacing
Welding International, 1996Summary Although several surfacing processes have been proposed and applied, none has been able to apply a 1 mm thick hard layer. This paper describes fundamental research to establish friction surfacing as a technique for applying a 1 mm thick hard layer.

In a study of hard surface detergency using glyceryl trioleate, oleic acid, and octanoic acid soils with three types of anionic and three types of nonionic syndets, only potassium laurate showed maximum detergency at the CMC (critical micelle concentration), with the potassium laurateoctanoic acid system being an exception.

AbstractThree key points for hard surface detergent making are: knowledge of raw materials, understanding of product application, and use of adequate test methods. The enormous variety of hard surface cleaner applications leads to a wide spectrum of product types.

The effect of surface hardness on friction
Wear, 1987Abstract The influence of bulk hardness, surface hardness and strain-hardening rate on the frictional behavior of Cu-Sn and Cu-Al alloys was investigated. Unlubricated specimens were subjected to severe relative sliding against tool steel (D2) and aluminum bronze (Ampco 25) anvils under constant interference conditions.

Theory and Practice of Hard-Surface Cleaning
1965Publisher Summary This chapter is concerned with the removal of soil from hard surfaces and the work done in textile and related fields has been considered. The manner in which a soil is attached to a substrate is related to the physical and chemical characteristics of both the soil and the substrate. Most cleaning processes are considered to consist

Laboratory studies were performed to assess the impact of peroxide bleaching on enamel surface and subsurface physical and ultrastructural properties. Human enamel blocks were prepared, polished, and measured for native color. Cyclic bleaching treatments were carried out with soaks in whole stimulated saliva interspersed with bleaching treatments using
