In this study, we show that retinal matrix stiffness is increased in diabetic mice. Using engineered human vascular models with controlled matrix stiffness, we demonstrate that stiffening activates focal adhesion kinase (FAK) signaling in pericytes, suppresses Notch signaling, and disrupts vascular morphology.

The Spatiotemporal Surface Velocity Variations and Analysis of Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica
The surface velocity of the Amery Ice Shelf (AIS) is vital to assessing its stability and mass balance. Previous studies have shown that the AIS basin has a stable multi-year average surface velocity. However, spatiotemporal variations in the surface velocity of the AIS and the underlying physical mechanism remain poorly understood. This study combined

A Noninvasive Approach to Study Localized Forces in 3D Epithelia
Epithelial morphogenesis depends on dynamic mechanical coupling between adhesion complexes and the cytoskeleton, yet its regulation in polarized 3D tissues remains elusive. We developed a noninvasive strategy using cell‐like elastic microbeads to quantify local forces in intact epithelia.

. Surface runoff at the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) drains to the ice-sheet bed, leading to enhanced summer ice flow. Ice velocities show a pattern of early summer acceleration followed by mid-summer deceleration due to evolution of the ...

Assessing controls on mass budget and surface velocity variations of glaciers in Western Himalaya
This study analyses spatially resolved estimates of mass budget and surface velocity of glaciers in the Zanskar Basin of Western Himalaya in the context of varying debris cover, glacier hypsometry and orientation. The regional glacier mass budget for the

Quantifying subglacial roughness and its link to glacial geomorphology and ice speed [PDF]
The shape of subglacial bed topography, termed its roughness, is a recognised control on basal ice-flow. Although glaciologists have observed patterns of variations in ice speed over beds with different roughness values, the strength of this relationship

Amphiphilic non‐isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) coatings containing reactive hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and hydrophilic methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) prepolymers for marine antifouling (AF) and fouling‐release (FR) applications were investigated. The coatings were evaluated with a set of representative marine foulants.

We introduce a novel method combining microfluidics, optogenetics, and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology to encapsulate single iPSC‐derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC‐CMs) in an optimal environment for functional characterization. This method enables direct genotype‐phenotype correlation for genetic studies and high‐throughput screening ...

Direct determination of the air‐sea CO2 gas transfer velocity in Arctic sea ice regions
The Arctic Ocean is an important sink for atmospheric CO2. The impact of decreasing sea ice extent and expanding marginal ice zones on Arctic air‐sea CO2 exchange depends on the rate of gas transfer in the presence of sea ice.
