Surface Properties of Suberin [PDF]
The surface energy of suberin was determined by four different methods, namely, (i) contact angle measurements, (ii) Wilhelmy plate measurements, (iii) maximum bubble pressure, and (iv) inverse gas chromatography (IGC). The first three methods gave a gammasub value in the range 40-50 mN m-1 at room temperature.

Variability of the surface properties of sepiolite [PDF]
A comparative study of a wide collection of sepiolites (22 samples from different locations, including samples coming from the greatest deposits of sepiolite in the world) was made with the aim of understanding the real variability of the surface properties in sepiolite.

Mechanical Properties of Cometary Surfaces
Mechanical properties, in particular, strength (tensile, shear, compressive) and porosity, are important parameters for understanding the evolution and activity of comets. However, they are notoriously difficult to measure. Unfortunately, neither Deep Impact nor other comet observations prior to Rosetta provided firm data on the strength of cometary ...

A property of complete minimal surfaces [PDF]
If M M is a complete minimal surface in R n {R^n} , we denote by W W the set of points in R n {R^n} that do not lie on any tangent plane of M M .

Nanomechanical properties of rough surfaces [PDF]
The nanoindentation technique allows the determination of mechanical properties at nanometric scale. Hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) profiles are usually determined by using the Oliver-Pharr method from the load/unload curves. This approach is valid only for flat surfaces, or at least, when a very low degree of asperity is present (lower than 30 ...

Surface properties and the perception of color
We examined whether perception of color saturation and lightness depends on the three-dimensional (3D) shape and surface gloss of surfaces rendered to have different hues. In Experiment 1, we parametrically varied specular roughness of predominantly planar surfaces with different mesoscopic relief heights.

Surface Properties of Vitreous Fibers
The surface properties of various vitreous fibers, suspected to be toxic to humans and animals, were investigated by means of paramagnetic labels covalently linked to the surface. Computer-aided analysis of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra provided structural and dynamic information on the label and its environment.

Quantum oscillations in surface properties
Many properties of metallic thin films have been shown to oscillate with film thickness due to quantum size effects, i.e. the confinement of electrons inside epitaxial metal overlayers which causes quantization of the electronic states. This is a very general phenomenon and it affects both bulk properties of the films, such as resistivity or ...

Cleaning and Surface Properties
Principles of the precision cleaning dedicated to ultra-high vacuum applications are reviewed together with the techniques for the evaluation of surface cleanliness. Methods to verify the effectiveness of cleaning procedures are addressed. Examples are presented to illustrate the influence of packaging and storage on the recontamination of the surface ...
