Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Study on Surface Roughness of Gcr15 Machined by Micro-Texture PCBN Tools

open access: yesMachines, 2018
This paper applies micro textures to the rake face of PCBN (Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) tools, including three types of micro textures that are microgroove textures vertical to the cutting edge, microgroove textures parallel to the cutting edge,

Influence of a Hydrogen Addition to the Inert Gas and Subsequent Heat Treatments on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Magnesium WE43 Fabricated by PBF‐LB/M

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article investigates optimal processing conditions for the laser‐based powder bed fusion of WE43. To limit the interaction with remaining oxygen, a 3 vol% hydrogen admixture to the inert gas is investigated. Furthermore, heat treatments are investigated in the range of 250–350 °C for 48 h.

The effects of material combination and surface roughness in lubricated silicon nitride/steel rolling contact fatigue [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Four kinds of commercially finished 12.7 min HIPed silicon nitride bearing balls with surface roughness values R-a ranging from 0.002 to 0.016 mum were tested using a four-ball rolling configuration.

An Examination of Aerosol Jet‐Printed Surface Roughness and its Impact on the Performance of High‐Frequency Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores aerosol jet‐printed (AJP) surface roughness, its effects on the performance of microwave electronics, and its process contributors. First, an electromagnetic model is vetted for AJP's unique roughness signature. Simulations are built which show process‐induced roughness is as significant as conductor resistivity in driving microwave

Artificial intelligence for automatic prediction of required surface roughness by monitoring wear on face mill teeth

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Manufacturing, 2017
Nowadays, face milling is one of the most widely used machining processes for the generation of flat surfaces. Following international standards, the quality of a machined surface is measured in terms of surface roughness, Ra, a parameter that will ...

Geometry‐Based Scan Curve Analysis: Rapid Method for the Evaluation of Scan Strategies in Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents rapid evaluation methods for scan strategies in powder bed fusion (PBF) of polymers with a NIR laser as an example for its application. It uses line buffer‐based calculations and point density fields to predict the performance of four different scan strategies. The methods show promising results in laser‐based PBF of polymer samples,
