Interreflections with rough surfaces

Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition, 2002
Interreflections are an important visual effect that needs to be accounted for in any endeavour that exploits photometry and radiometry, such as shape from shading and color constancy. Previous work on interreflections has considered pure nonrough Lambertian reflection only, and this is a crude approximation to the physics of light reflection.

Ellipsometry of rough surfaces

Applied Optics, 1980
Ellipsometry measurements on several different kinds of rough surfaces were compared with stylus measurements of the surface texture. For steeply sloped periodic surfaces, the ellipsometric angles Delta and psi varied rapidly as the angle of incidence was varied near a diffraction minimum. This effect is interpreted in terms of the Kirchhoff theory and

The dependence of polarimetric coherence on surface roughness for very rough surfaces

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
The focus of this study is on the polarimetric signature of very rough surfaces. It has been shown that the co-polarized backscatter components, HH and VV, for very rough surfaces do not conform to the first order Bragg model. Laboratory backscatter measurements across a wide range of frequencies are used to investigate the transition from the Bragg ...

Rough surface scattering

Waves in Random Media, 1991
Abstract A summary of the theoretical and computational approaches to rough surface scattering is presented. For the Dirichlet problem new computational results are presented for the behaviour of the normal derivative of the field on the surface as well as the behaviour of coherent and incoherent intensities as a function of angle and surface height ...

Ultrasonic measurements of surface roughness

Applied Optics, 1992
We describe the use of pulsed ultrasound at MHz carrier frequencies to reflect and scatter from rough surfaces in an analogous way that light is used, comparing the results to stylus data. A principal application is to the manufacturing environment for on-line real-time sensor feedback and process control.

Surface Roughness

2019
Abstract When two surfaces are brought into contact, they first touch where the summits of the surface asperities make contact. Consequently, surface roughness or topography strongly influences those physical phenomena associated with contact: friction, adhesion, and wear.

Surface polarons near rough surfaces

Physical Review B, 1989
