Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Impact of Hurricane Irene on Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus concentrations in surface water, sediment and cultured oysters in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2014
To determine if a storm event (i.e., high winds, large volumes of precipitation) could alter concentrations of Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in aquacultured oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and associated surface water and sediment, this ...

Soil carbon and nitrogen erosion in forested catchments: Implications for erosion-induced terrestrial carbon sequestration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Lateral movement of organic matter (OM) due to erosion is now considered an important flux term in terrestrial carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) budgets, yet most published studies on the role of erosion focus on agricultural or grassland ecosystems.

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Potential ecological risk from heavy metals in surface sediment of lotic systems in central region Peru

open access: yesFrontiers in Water
High Andean rivers are fragile ecosystems in the face of various threats, including heavy metal contamination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediment of lotic systems in the central ...

Generation of a Large-Scale Surface Sediment Classification Map using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Data: A Case Study at the Hwang-do Tidal Flat, Korea

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Tidal flats are associated with complicated depositional and ecological environments, and have changed considerably as a result of the erosion and sedimentation caused by tidal energy; consequently, the surface sediment distribution in tidal flats must ...

A spatially distributed model for the dynamic prediction of sediment erosion and transport in mountainous forested watersheds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Erosion and sediment transport in a temperate forested watershed are predicted with a new sediment model that represents the main sources of sediment generation in forested environments (mass wasting, hillslope erosion, and road surface erosion) within ...

Process‐Informed Analysis of As‐Built Metal Additive Surface Features

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article introduces a novel method for feature‐based surface texture characterisation directly incorporating manufacturing variables into the feature extraction workflow. This marks a major step towards identifying process‐specific surface properties and their influence on part function and hence a holistic understanding of process–structure ...

Grain size and heavy metal assessment in barchan dunes surrounding the Talatan PV power generation area, Qinghai Province

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Communications
Heavy metal contamination in sediments near photovoltaic (PV) power generation areas poses potential environmental risks, requiring detailed characterization and source apportionment to facilitate sustainable management.

Numerical modelling of erosion and sedimentation around offshore pipelines [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
In this paper a numerical model is presented for the description of the erosion and sedimentation near pipelines on the sea bottom. The model is based on the Navier-Stokes equations and the equation of motion and continuity of sediment.\ud \ud The ...
