Controlling Surface Reactions with Nanopatterned Surface Elastic Strain
ACS Nano, 2014The application of elastic lattice strain is a promising approach for tuning material properties, but the attainment of a systematic approach for introducing a high level of strain in materials so as to study its effects has been a major challenge. Here we create an array of intense locally varying strain fields on a TiO2 (110) surface by introducing ...

Diffusion on strained surfaces
Surface Science, 1997The change of diffusion kinetics when elastic fields are present is discussed for diffusion on (001) surfaces of simple cubic, fcc and bcc lattices. All particles interact pairwise with a Lennard-Jones potential. The simple cubic lattice was stabilized by an anisotropic prefactor.

Surface strain of tungsten (001)
Physical Review B, 1991We report the results of {ital ab} {ital initio} local-density-functional total-energy calculations of W(001) slabs of varying thickness as a function of the in-plane or surface lattice parameter. The results are used to isolate the surface strain energy of the ideal surface. We find that the ideal W(001) surface is softer than the bulk and has a small

Surface-strain effects on photorefractive gratings
Optics Letters, 1995Taking the crystal surface to be traction free, we calculate the lattice distortions and associated elasto-optic refractive-index changes induced by a photorefractive grating. The surface effects are significant and result in refractive-index changes near the surface that differ considerably from bulk values.
