Gas vesicles are strengthened by the outer-surface protein, GvpC

Archives of Microbiology, 1992
The critical collapse pressure of gas vesicles isolated from Anabaena flos-aquae decreased from 0.557 to 0.190 MPa when GvpC, the hydrophilic 22 kDa protein present on the outer surface of the gas vesicle, was removed by rising in 6 M urea. Recombinant GvpC was purified from inclusion bodies, produced in an E.

Surface strengthening produced by an inherent polycrystalline layer

Metallurgical Transactions A, 1976
Inherent polycrystalline layers 20 to 40 μm thick were produced on Cu single crystal substrates by a controlled surface abrasion and annealing technique. A surface zone produced in this fashion theoretically minimizes certain parameters associated with film strengthening such as, film-substrate modulus differences, chemical composition gradients, film ...

[Strengthen the study of the ocular surface reconstruction].

[Zhonghua yan ke za zhi] Chinese journal of ophthalmology, 2011
Serious ocular surface damage caused by chemical and thermal burn has the characteristics of wide prevalence of the population, high blinding rate and hard to treat. Ocular surface reconstruction is an effective management in treating damaged ocular surface, but there still exist some common misunderstanding including inappropriate surgery time ...

Strengthening of silicon carbide by surface compressive layer

Journal of Materials Science, 1995
Silicon carbide ceramics containing 4.7 wt% WC and 0.3 wt% Co were fabricated by hot-pressing with various additives (B, AIN, and polycarbosilane). Addition of WC and Co liquid phase resulted in considerable increase in flexural strength up to 1085 MPa for the 1 wt% AIN, 0.5 wt% B, and 20 wt% polycarbosilane-added specimen.

Laser Surface Strengthening on Module Steel

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
Whether laser surface strengthening on module steel can have an effect on intensity, shock resistance and wearing resistance. Through analysis of different materials with different laser methods, this paper uses high-power carbon dioxide lasers to process the work of strengthening laser on CrWMn, conduct structural analysis and test on laser hardening ...

Compressive surface strengthening of brittle materials

Journal of Materials Science, 1984
A theoretical approach has been put forward for predicting the strengthening of materials by the introduction of surface compressive stresses. An approximate technique was used to determine the closure length of a linear surface crack which extends through the compressive surface layer. The stress intensity factor of the partially closed crack was then

Ways to Strengthen Glass: Modification of the Surface Layer

Glass and Ceramics, 2016
The strength of glass can be increased by modifying the surface layer. The following are examined: graded glass in which the glass strength in increased by means of the CLTE differential over the glass thickness; ion bombardment at room temperature where large atoms are embedded (implanted) in the glass in a strong electromagnetic field; protective ...
