Topography-driven surface renewal

Nature Physics, 2018
Natural surfaces excel in self-renewal and preventing bio-fouling, while synthetic materials placed in contact with complex fluids quickly foul [1, 3]. We present a novel biophysics inspired mechanism [4, 5] for surface renewal using actuating surface topography, generated by wrinkling.

Surface topography by caustics

Applied Optics, 1976
The optical method of caustics, initially developed for recording abrupt plate slopes created by singularities in elastic stress fields, was extended to incorporate the study of the general case of any type of surface. A universal technique, based on the general theory of caustics developed in this paper, was formulated to study the topography of any ...

Surface Topography Hinders Bacterial Surface Motility

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2018
We demonstrate that the surface motility of the bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is hindered by a crystalline hemispherical topography with wavelength in the range of 2-8 μm. The motility was determined by the analysis of time-lapse microscopy images of cells in a flowing growth medium maintained at 37 °C.

Control of Cell Surface Topography

Nature, 1974
ACCORDING to the fluid mosaic model of membrane structure1, surface proteins are free to diffuse in a lipid matrix and thus to assume a random or homogenous distribution over the cell surface. In support of this model it has been shown that the distribution of glycoprotein receptors for the plant lectin concanavalin A (con A) is random in all cell ...

Surface Topography for Patient Repositioning

Medical Dosimetry, 1991
For many years, this group has been interested in the measurement of patient surface contours in order to prepare radiotherapy compensators. Recently, these surface measurements have been made using optical ranging techniques (Medical Physics 16:425; 1989).

Surface topography of etched GaAs surfaces

International Journal of Electronics, 1986
Double replica TEM of etched (100) GaAs surfaces has shown that acidic etching gives rough island-type Features whereas alkaline solutions seem to produce smooth surfaces.
