Gravity-driven flow of continuous thin liquid films on non-porous substrates with topography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A range of two- and three-dimensional problems is explored featuring the gravity-driven flow of a continuous thin liquid film over a non-porous inclined flat surface containing well-defined topography.

High-performance thermal emitters based on laser engineered metal surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Effective thermal management is of paramount importance for all high-temperature systems operating under vacuum. Cooling of such systems relies mainly on radiative heat transfer requiring high spectral emissivity of surfaces, which is strongly affected ...

Effect of Oxygen Content on Surface and Subsurface Integrity During Turning of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how oxygen content in the ambient atmosphere affects the surface and subsurface properties of Ti–6Al–4V during turning. Results show that oxygen does not influence surface roughness. However, machining in an extremely high vacuum‐adequate atmosphere increases surface hardness by up to 7.8% and induces compressive residual stresses ...

A Fast Shape-from-Focus-Based Surface Topography Measurement Method

open access: yesSensors, 2021
Shape from focus is an accurate, but relatively time-consuming, 3D profilometry technique (compared to e.g., laser triangulation or fringe projection). This is the case because a large amount of data that needs to be captured and processed to obtain 3D ...

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Impacts of mean dynamic topography on a regional ocean assimilation system [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2015
An ocean data assimilation system was developed for the Pacific–Indian oceans with the aim of assimilating altimetry data, sea surface temperature, and in situ measurements from Argo (Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography), XBT (expendable ...

Snap evaporation of droplets on smooth topographies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Droplet evaporation on solid surfaces is important in many applications including printing, micro-patterning and cooling. While seemingly simple, the configuration of evaporating droplets on solids is difficult to predict and control.

Assessing Altered Coating Adhesion on Plasma‐Deoxidized Surfaces Under Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment in modifying silicon and stainless steel surfaces to improve adhesion. Argon‐hydrogen plasma increases surface roughness and improves adhesion strength, whereas pure argon results in smoother surfaces and structural changes.

Preparation and characterization of diatom-based As(Ⅴ) surface imprinted materials

open access: yesCailiao gongcheng, 2020
Using diatom as a material carrier, silane coupling agent aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) was selected as the functional monomer, As (Ⅴ) was used as the template ion, and epichlorohydrin (ECH) was used as the crosslinking agent, the imprinted composite

Local log-law of the wall: numerical evidences and reasons

open access: yes, 2000
Numerical studies performed with a primitive equation model on two-dimensional sinusoidal hills show that the local velocity profiles behave logarithmically to a very good approximation, from a distance from the surface of the order of the maximum hill ...
