The Topological Complexity of a Surface

open access: yes, 2015
Let $p$ be a branched covering of a Riemann surface to the Riemann sphere $\mathbb{P}^1$, with branching set $B \subset \mathbb{P}^1$. We define the complexity of $p$ as infinity, if $\mathbb{P}^1 \setminus B$ does not admit a hyperbolic structure, or the product of its degree and the hyperbolic area of $\mathbb{P}^1 \setminus B$, otherwise.

Reconfigurable 3D Magnetic Nanoarchitectures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This experimental study confirms that 3D magnetic tetrapods grown by focused electron beam‐induced deposition exhibit sequential, controllable magnetization reversal in the individual nanowire legs. The magnetic state of the nanoarchitecture can be controlled individually, on‐demand, through a variation of the direction and magnitude of the applied ...

Reconfigurable Metamirrors Based on Compliant Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Providing the basis for numerous practical applications, the reconfigurability of metadevices is of great importance. Through the integration of controlled mechanical deformation with chiral meta‐atoms, a compliant mechanism based metamirror is demonstrated for active control over the polarization of electromagnetic waves.

Design Considerations of a New IPM Rotor With Efficient Utilization of PMs Enabled by Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesIEEE Access
This paper presents a new design concept for interior permanent magnet (IPM) rotor using the capabilities of additive manufacturing (AM). In conventional laminated IPM topology, the presence of rotor ribs is essential for maintaining the mechanical ...

Programmable Entanglement of Granular Mechanical Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This paper introduces entangled granular metamaterials—clusters of complex grains whose interlocking drives emergent, tunable properties. Here, we identify geometric features that enable entanglement and quantify them via disentanglement dynamics. We demonstrate robotic handling where magnetically controlled grains achieve robust collective picking and

Analysis of Tooth Surface Error of Topology Modification Gear

open access: yesJixie chuandong, 2017
When gear topology modification using the forming method grinding, the tooth profile modification is achieved by trimming the wheel truncation, while the tooth modification is achieved by adding an additional movement of the wheel or gear.

Emergent Spin‐Glass Behavior in an Iron(II)‐Based Metal–Organic Framework Glass

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A one‐pot, solvent‐free synthesis yields an Fe2+‐based metal‐organic framework (MOF) glass featuring a continuous random network structure. The material exhibits spin‐glass freezing at 14 K, driven by topological‐disorder and short‐range magnetic frustration, showcasing the potential of MOF glasses as a plattform for cooperative magnetic phenomena in ...
