A Simulative Approach for the Prediction of Mesoscale Residual Stress Fields in Solution‐Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a 3D representative volume element‐based simulation approach to predict mesoscopic residual stress and strain fields in silicon solid solution‐strengthened ductile cast iron. By modeling phase transformation kinetics with an enhanced Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov model, the effects of varying cooling rates on residual stresses are ...

Detection of Surface States in Quantum Materials ZrTe2 and TmB4 by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

open access: yesCondensed Matter, 2023
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STM/S), with its exceptional surface sensitivity and exquisite energy resolution, is well suited for the investigation of surface states down to atomic length scales. As such, it became an essential tool to

Atmospheric Ice Adhesion on Water-Repellent Coatings: Wetting and Surface Topology Effects.

open access: yesLangmuir, 2015
Recent studies have shown the potential of water-repellent surfaces such as superhydrophobic surfaces in delaying ice accretion and reducing ice adhesion.

Combining Metal Additive Manufacturing and Casting Technology: High Performance Cooling Channels for Electric Powertrain Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
When realized as inserts in high‐pressure die casting, aluminum cooling channels for electric powertrain components and similar applications typically require a stabilizing filler to survive the process. The present study investigates relinquishing this filler using additively manufactured inserts promising performance improvements.

Event-triggered joint connectivity topology containment control for unmanned surface ship systems under time delay

open access: yesJournal of Applied Science and Engineering, 2023
For the containment control problem of unmanned surface ship systems (USSs) with time delay and limited communication bandwidth, this paper proposes a distributed event-triggered control strategy using a joint connection switching topology.

Is a Knowledge of Surface Topology and Contact Angles Enough to Define the Drop Impact Outcome?

open access: yesLangmuir, 2016
It is well known that a superhydrophobic surface may not be able to repel impacting droplets because of the so-called Cassie-to-Wenzel transition. It has been proven that a critical value of the receding contact angle (θR) exists for the complete rebound

Topological charges and the genus of surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geometry and Physics, 1997
We show that the topological charge of the n-soliton solution of the sine-Gordon equation n is related to the genus g > 1 of a constant negative curvature compact surface described by this configuration. The relation is n=2(g-1), where n is even. The moduli space of complex dimension B(g)=3(g-1) corresponds precisely to the freedom to choosing the ...

Electronic Control System for Optimized Resonance Operation of Dielectric Elastomer Pumps through Self‐Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A powerful electronic control system enables a dielectric elastomer pump to operate at resonance, matching conventional pump performance. Using self‐sensing to reconstruct load pressure dynamically, the adaptive control adjusts resonance frequency accordingly.

Topology‐Aware Surface Reconstruction for Point Clouds [PDF]

open access: yesComputer graphics forum (Print), 2018
We present an approach to incorporate topological priors in the reconstruction of a surface from a point scan. We base the reconstruction on basis functions which are optimized to provide a good fit to the point scan while satisfying predefined ...

Response of the topological surface state to surface disorder in TlBiSe2 [PDF]

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
Through a combination of experimental techniques we show that the topmost layer of the topological insulator TlBiSe2 as prepared by cleavage is formed by irregularly shaped Tl islands at cryogenic temperatures and by mobile Tl atoms at room temperature.
