Shear velocity structure of central Eurasia from inversion of surface wave velocities

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 2001
We present a shear velocity model of the crust and upper mantle beneath central Eurasia by simultaneous inversion of broadband group and phase velocity maps of fundamental-mode Love and Rayleigh waves. The model is parameterized in terms of velocity depth profiles on a discrete 2 2 grid.

Simultaneous free-surface deformation and near-surface velocity measurements

Experiments in Fluids, 2001
A newly developed non-intrusive approach has been devised for studying near-surface flows where it is important to be able to construct correlations between small-sloped free-surface deformations and near-surface velocities. This method combines digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and the reflective mode of the free-surface gradient detector ...

Velocity-dependent surface corrugation in gas–surface scattering

Physics of Fluids
Gas–surface scattering transitions from the thermal to the structure scattering regime as incident energy increases, with the dominant mechanism shifting from surface thermal motion to surface corrugation. Conventional models such as the Maxwell and Cercignani–Lampis–Lord (CLL) models incorporate thermal motion but neglect explicit corrugation effects,

Surface wave tomography to retrieve near surface velocity models

SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2014, 2014
Surface-wave tomography is usually applied at regional or planetary scale but represent an interesting approach also for near surface applications. We present a surface wave dispersion tomography that does not require the construction of phase or group velocity maps and which inverts path-specific dispersion data directly for 3-D Swave velocity ...

From rotations and inclinations to zero configurational velocity surfaces, II. The best possible configurational velocity surfaces

Celestial Mechanics, 1987
Summary: [For part I see the author, ibid. 33, 299-318 (1984; Zbl 0549.70003).] The best possible zero-configurational velocity surfaces for the general N-body problem in three space are derived. The basic construction of these surfaces is described in detail for the three body problem and for other flat configurations.

Observations of Surface Velocity Fields

1987
This brief review discusses several recent papers on the motions of individual sunspots and sunspot groups. Measurements of spot areas and positions from Mount Wilson white-light, full-disk plates were carried out for an interval covering most of this century. Rotation and meridional motions were derived from these measures.

Surface velocity radar stream gauging

2012

Near-surface velocity reconstruction using surface wave inversion

2013
This thesis examines the feasibility of inverting surface waves in common shot point (CSP) scismic data for S- and P-wave velocities. Several approaches to surface wave inversion are examined: 1) separate Love and Rayleigh wave inversions for S- and P-wave velocities; 2) Love wave inversion for S-wave velocities that is then followed by Rayleigh wave ...

The phase velocity, ray velocity, and group velocity surfaces for a magneto-ionic medium

Journal of Plasma Physics, 1977
The phase velocity surface for waves propagating in a uniform cold plasma is sometimes misinterpreted as having the shape of a wave-front. A summary is presented of the correct interpretations of the phase velocity, ray velocity, and group velocity surfaces. A full set of computer generated plots of such surfaces are presented. These are intended as an
