Swath Mapping Altimetry over Sea Ice: First Results from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Mission

SWOT provides the first opportunity to study the polar oceans with swath mapping altimetry from space. Using case studies in the Beaufort Sea, we demonstrate the utility of swath altimetry for mapping sea ice in 3D. SWOT’s combined height and backscatter observations are useful for distinguishing leads from ice floes.
