A laser beam propagating in a photorefractive crystal generates a refractive-index profile that deflects the beam to one side. This nonlinear deflection can be balanced by total internal reflection at the crystal surface to produce self-induced photorefractive surface waves. Theoretical and experimental evidence for this effect is given.

This paper discusses the Skin Surface Shock Wave which is generated after we impart an impulsive force to human skin. The force is given by an air jet during 200 [ms]. The basic behavior of shock wave is measured by a high speed camera with the frame rate of 2000 [Hz].

Nonlocal Surface-Wave Solitons
Physical Review Letters, 2007We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, surface-wave solitons occurring at the interface between a dielectric medium (air) and a nonlinear material with a very long-range nonlocal response. These surface solitons are always attracted toward the surface, and unlike their Kerr-like counterparts, they do not exhibit a power threshold.

Observation of Dyakonov Surface Waves
CLEO/Europe - EQEC 2009 - European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the European Quantum Electronics Conference, 2009We report the first experimental observation of Dyakonov surface waves existing at the interface of transparent anisotropic crystals. A Otto-Kretchmann configuration was used to excite the surface waves at the interface between a potassium titanyl phosphate biaxial crystal and an index-matching liquid fulfilling the conditions at which the waves exist.

A Progressing Wave Formalism for Surface Waves
SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1970A progressing wave formalism is developed for surface waves, that is, for the solutions of a linear, hyperbolic equation which satisfy a linear, hyperbolic and stable boundary condition. The surface waves are shown to possess a phase, and an amplitude, determined respectively by constructing surface rays and integrating along these rays.
