GPS Reflections for Sea Surface Wind Speed Measurement
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2008In this letter, Global Positioning System (GPS) reflections for sea surface wind speed measurement are explored. The reflected signal correlation power is employed to retrieve the sea surface wind speed with a certain degree of accuracy. The GPS coarse-acquisition code autocorrelation sidelobe is studied and considered in the reflected signal model ...

A NOTE ON SURFACE WIND-SPEED OBSERVATIONS
Monthly Weather Review, 1965Abstract Hourly surface wind-speed observations recorded over 2 yrs, at 16 Weather Bureau Airport Stations were studied to establish relationships between average daily speeds and the frequencies of individual hourly speeds. Only days with no precipitation were considered.

The Probability Distribution of Land Surface Wind Speeds
Journal of Climate, 2011Abstract The probability density function (pdf) of land surface wind speeds is characterized using a global network of observations. Daytime surface wind speeds are shown to be broadly consistent with the Weibull distribution, while nighttime surface wind speeds are generally more positively skewed than the corresponding Weibull ...

ECMWF and SSM/I Global Surface Wind Speeds
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 1994Monthly mean, 2.5 deg - x 2.5 deg-resolution, 10-m height wind speeds from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSMI) instrument and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) forecast-analysis system are compared between 60 deg S and 60 deg N during 1988-1991. The SSMI data were uniformly processed while numerous changes were

Frequency Distribution of Wind Speed Near the Surface
Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1978Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide information about frequency distributions of wind speed near the surface of the earth. There has been a recent increased interest in this topic because of the potential for obtaining electrical energy from wind power.

A SAR Cross-Pol Correlation Sea Surface Wind Speed Study
IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018A new study based on the complex and amplitude cross-pol correlation is made. It exploits Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex (SLC) SAR and reference HSCAT wind data. The behavior of these two polarimetric features vs wind speed is analyzed. Low-to-moderate and high wind speed regimes are considered.

Recently, a compact system, able to record raw GPS intermediate frequency (IF) samples has been designed and tested by the research group at the CU/Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department. Such an approach provides the most fundamental measurement, enabling the most advanced and complete post-processing, with data volumes on the order of 1GB/minute ...

Estimating the Surface Wind Speed Over Drifting Pack Ice from Surface Weather Charts
Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 1979Routine surface wind speed data, vital for the study of drifting pack ice, are not available for the polar oceans. Over sea, it has been demonstrated by Hasse that estimates of surface wind speed may be obtained from the geostrophic wind speed using linear formulae.

Sea surface wind speed inversion using low incident NRCS
2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016As the launch of radars, such as the Precipitation Radar (PR) on Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)[1] satellite and the Surface Wave Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) on China France Oceanography SATellite (CFOSAT)[2], that operate in low incident angles, more and more NRCS data at low incident angle will be obtained.

Statistical characteristics of the surface wind speeds over Kenya
Journal of Applied Statistics, 1989In this study attempts were made to fit several statistical distributions to the surface maximum, minimum and mean daily wind speed records at 24 Kenyan sites. The statistical distributions fitted included the 2 and 3 parameter Lognormal, Pearson type III, Log Pearson type III, the 2 and 3 parameter Weibull distributions.
