Comparative evaluation of the informative value of methods for determining the volume of intraoperative blood loss in the surgical treatment of burn victims

open access: yesВестник хирургии имени И.И. Грекова, 2021
The OBJECTIVE was to evaluate the informative value of various methods for determining the volume of blood loss during early surgical excision with simultaneous skin grafting with split grafts in patients with full thickness burns.MATERIAL AND METHODS ...

Use of Topical (Intra-articular) Tranexamic Acid to Minimise Blood Loss and Transfusion in Total Knee Replacement Surgery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Introduction Total knee replacement (TKR) is a common orthopaedic procedure, with 20-70% of patients needing 1-3 units of blood, although allogeneic transfusion is not risk free.

Intravenous tranexamic acid as an adjunct haemostat to ornipressin during open myomectomy. A randomized double blind placebo controlled trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Myomectomy is a surgical technique used for removal of uterine fibroids and historically hysterectomy has represented the mainstay of treatment. The options of conservative surgical approaches mainly aim at retention of fertility but have to be balanced ...

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Quantification and influencing factors of perioperative hidden blood loss in patients undergoing laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy for benign ovarian tumours

open access: yesJournal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2022
This retrospective, monocentric study quantified hidden blood loss (HBL) and investigated its influencing factors in benign ovarian tumour patients undergoing laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy.

Blood Loss and Influencing Factors in Primary Total Hip Arthroplasties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Introduction: Orthopaedic surgery results in significant blood loss. There are no studies that can aid the surgeon in the African region estimate the  expected blood loss after total hip replacement.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Effects of Anemia Treatment on the Accuracy of Measured Blood Loss in Pregnant Women Undergoing Cesarean Delivery: A Retrospective Study

open access: yesJournal of Obstetric Anaesthesia and Critical Care
Context: There is no gold standard method for quantifying the volume of blood loss in surgical settings. Aims: To investigate the effects of anemia treatment on the differences between measured blood loss (MBL) and calculated blood loss (CBL) in pregnant

Scintigraphic assessment of bone status at one year following hip resurfacing : comparison of two surgical approaches using SPECT-CT scan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Objectives: To study the vascularity and bone metabolism of the femoral head/neck following hip resurfacing arthroplasty, and to use these results to compare the posterior and the trochanteric-flip approaches.

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses
