BLOOD DETERMINATION AND ESTIMATION OF BLOOD LOSS DURING SURGICAL OPERATIONS

Archives of Surgery, 1948
THE CONDITION of the surgical patient postoperatively depends on several factors, among which are surgical trauma, length of operation, type of anesthesia and loss of blood. The more closely each of these factors can be maintained to normal, the more rapid will be the patient's recovery.

EFFECT OF ADRENOXYL ON BLOOD LOSS FROM SURGICAL WOUNDS

Archives of Surgery, 1949
IT WAS demonstrated by W. B. Cannon1in 1914 that intravenous or subcutaneous injection of small amounts of epinephrine would shorten the coagulation time of blood by one half to two thirds. He also observed that after large doses of epinephrine there was first a lengthening and later a shortening of coagulation time.

Effect of surgical blood loss and volume replacement on antibiotic pharmacokinetics [PDF]

open access: possibleThe Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1989
Antibiotic prophylaxis is used widely to prevent postoperative infection associated with cardiac operations. The influence of perioperative blood loss on antibiotic pharmacokinetics has not been well studied. Plasma cefazolin sodium samples from 8 patients undergoing a cardiac operation were collected postoperatively and analyzed.

Local Tranexamic Acid Reduces Surgical Blood Loss

Wounds : a compendium of clinical research and practice, 2022
Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a synthetic lysine analog that reduces perioperative blood loss by blocking lysine-binding sites on plasminogen molecules. It has been reported to be effective in limiting blood loss and transfusion needs in various orthopedic surgeries and for pediatric patients at high risk of blood loss.1,2 Randomized controlled trials (RCTs)

Blood loss in surgical oncology: Neglected quality indicator?

Journal of Surgical Oncology, 2009
AbstractQuality indicators can be defined as “specific and measurable elements of practice that can be used to assess the quality of care”. Surgical blood loss is one of the most significant perioperative predictors of patient outcome. Blood loss is a modifiable quality indicator for oncologic cancer surgery.

Management of Major Surgical Blood Loss Without Transfusion

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1966
Six patients of the Jehovah's Witness faith underwent open-heart surgery without receiving blood at any time. Marked acute decreases in red blood cell mass and low absolute levels of hematocrit followed exclusive use of crystalloid solutions for priming the extracorporeal apparatus and to replace blood loss postoperatively. Sequential studies of renal,

Impact of surgical approach on blood loss during intracapsular myomectomy

Minimally Invasive Therapy & Allied Technologies, 2013
Myomectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in gynecology and has implications on fertility and subsequent pregnancies. We compared the impact of surgical approach on blood loss during laparoscopic and abdominal intracapsular myomectomy. The evaluation comprised 124 fertile women with subserous or intramural myomas: 66 patients treated by ...

Systemic Hemostatic Medications for Reducing Surgical Blood Loss

The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 2001
OBJECTIVE: To review randomized trials involving the use of systemic hemostatic medications for reducing surgical blood loss. DATA SOURCES: Articles were obtained through searches of MEDLINE (1966–September 2000). The bibliographies of retrieved publications were reviewed for additional references.

Anesthetic Techniques and Surgical Blood Loss in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica, 1982
Blood loss during total hip arthroplasty and the relation of different anesthetic techniques to surgical bleeding was explored in a consecutive, prospective study involving 157 patients with no previous history of hip surgery. Intraoperative blood loss was significantly reduced in patients operated under sodium nitroprusside induced hypotensive ...

Bleeding Time and Surgical Blood Losses in Nonhemorrhagic People

Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 1969
Summary1. Discussion of various clinical trials upon the hemostatic properties of adrenochrome derivatives suggest a possible correlation between bleeding time and hemostatic plug resistance.2. It is hoped that this hypothesis will result in new experiments in man and in laboratory animal which might improve general non-specific hemostatic therapy ...
