Is postoperative blood loss, loss of blood? A pilot study in cardiac surgical patients

The effect of estimating the blood balance using changes in erythrocyte volumes (EVs) instead of the routinely used changes in haematocrit values was studied in 20 patients scheduled for cardiac surgery. We determined the mean haematocrit of the effluent from the postoperative thoracic drainage system at various time intervals.

IT WAS demonstrated by W. B. Cannon1in 1914 that intravenous or subcutaneous injection of small amounts of epinephrine would shorten the coagulation time of blood by one half to two thirds. He also observed that after large doses of epinephrine there was first a lengthening and later a shortening of coagulation time.
