Efficacy of surgical management for recurrent intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A multi-institutional study by the Okayama Study Group of HBP surgery.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
BackgroundThe prognosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) has been poor, because of the high recurrence rate even after curative surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of surgical resection of recurrent ICC.Patients and ...

The surgical resection margin [PDF]

open access: yesHead & Neck Oncology, 2009
In the treatment of cancer the fundamental surgical goal is to remove all local malignant disease and leave no residual malignant cells. Studies have demonstrated the benefit of achieving negative resection margins in terms of disease free local recurrence and overall survival.

Type I interferons modulate autophagy to shape gemcitabine response in pancreatic cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Type I interferons differentially modulate autophagy and the response of pancreatic cancer cells to gemcitabine. IFNα2b stimulates autophagic flux and protects cells from gemcitabine‐induced cell death, contributing to chemoresistance. In contrast, IFNβ1a inhibits autophagosome formation and enhances gemcitabine‐induced cell death, resulting in ...

Five‐Year Outcomes of Laparoscopic Sphincter‐Preserving Surgery for Rectal Cancer: A Prospective Study in Elderly Vietnamese Patients

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This prospective study demonstrates that laparoscopic sphincter‐preserving surgery is feasible for elderly patients. While overall survival reaches 70% at 5 years, advanced T‐stage and the omission of neoadjuvant therapy significantly drive recurrence, highlighting the need for personalized geriatric protocols despite logistical challenges.

Chronobiology of Cancer: How Aging Fuels Oncogenesis at the Molecular Level

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates the key biological pathways linking aging with cancer development and progression. In the upper left, cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, toxins, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) causes DNA damage and genomic instability, whereas age‐related decline in repair mechanisms, such as ATM/ATR, BER, and NER ...

Surgical Treatment and Survival in Patients with Liver Metastases from Neuroendocrine Tumors: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies

open access: yesInternational Journal of Hepatology, 2013
Introduction. The role of hepatic resection in patients with liver metastases from gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) is still poorly defined. Therefore, we examined the results obtained with surgical resection and other locoregional

Clinical Outcomes of SEEG‐Guided Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation in Children With Focal Drug‐Resistant Epilepsy: A Multicenter Real‐World Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Stereoelectroencephalography‐guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (SEEG‐RFTC) has emerged as a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment for children with drug‐resistant focal epilepsy. Although evidence from real‐world studies remains limited, numerous pediatric cases have demonstrated promising outcomes. This retrospective

Em2-ELISA for the follow-up of alveolar echinococcosis after complete surgical resection of liver lesions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Alveolar echinococcosis, a serious and often fatal human disease, can be efficiently cured only by complete surgical resection of the Echinococcus multilocularis lesion.

Computed tomography based cross-sectional anatomy of the pelvis predicts surgical outcome after rectal cancer surgery

open access: yes, 2021
Purpose: Narrow pelvis has been considered an adverse factor for postoperative and oncologic outcomes after rectal cancer surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the validity of using only axial CT scan images to calculate the pelvic cross ...
