Rotary 3D Printing With Integrated Electroplating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A rotary material extrusion platform integrates localized copper electroplating with printing and encapsulation to fabricate cylindrical polymer–metal structures containing fully embedded, low‐resistance conductive pathways that enable internal Joule heating and thermally activated shape‐memory responses.

Isolation and identification of antitrypanosomal and antimycobacterial active steroids from the sponge haliclona simulans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The marine sponge Haliclona simulans collected from the Irish Sea yielded two new steroids: 24-vinyl-cholest-9-ene-3β,24-diol and 20-methyl-pregn-6-en-3β-ol,5a,8a-epidioxy, along with the widely distributed 24-methylenecholesterol.

Dereplication strategies for targeted isolation of new antitrypanosomal actinosporins A and B from a marine sponge associated-Actinokineospora sp. EG49 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
High resolution Fourier transform mass spectrometry (HRFTMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were employed as complementary metabolomic tools to dereplicate the chemical profile of the new and antitrypanosomally active sponge-associated

Bioinspired Co‐Assembly Enables Multiscale Architected Hydrogels for 3D Printing With Integrated Antibacterial and Bioactive Functions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A multicomponent supramolecular hydrogel integrating cell‐adhesive and antibacterial peptides within an alginate‐cellulose nanofibril matrix is developed. Peptide co‐assembly simultaneously strengthens the hydrogel network, improves extrusion printability, and imparts cell‐adhesive and antibacterial functions, offering a versatile platform for ...

Sponge Aquaculture Trials in the East-Mediterranean Sea: New Approaches to Earlier Ideas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Aquaculture trials were conducted in the East Aegean Sea with Dysidea avara and Chondrosia reniformis to test the possibility of growing these sponges in the vicinity of sea-based fish farms.

Chitin‐Derived Carbon‐Metal Functional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Functional carbon materials are synthesized from combination of biopolymer (chitin) and iron precursors. The resultant material exhibits superior surface area and adsorptive properties compared to carbon materials synthesized directly from pure chitin.

Complete Intraluminal Migration of Surgical Sponge (Gossypiboma) With Complete Intestinal Obstruction

open access: yes, 2017
A 33 years aged gentle lady presented with the features suggestive of acute intestinal obstruction due to complete intraluminal migration of a laparotomy sponge, five years after open cholecystectomy in a private clinic.

Oclusão intestinal por compressas cirúrgicas intraluminais: experiência de cinco casos

open access: yesRevista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões
Despite being unusual, retained foreign bodies after surgical procedures is a matter of great concern for surgeons. The main purpose of this article is to describe five cases of intestinal obstruction due to intraluminal surgical sponges.

Programmable Soft Actuator with Multi‐Responsiveness Based on Conductive MOF‐Liquid Crystal Polymer Composite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A sequential dual‐alignment strategy independently programs the orientation of conductive metal‐organic framework (c‐MOF) microrods and liquid crystals within a composite film. This approach creates an asymmetric bilayer structure that enables precise, multi‐responsive actuation.

A different intracardiac mass: retained sponge.

open access: yes, 2006
We report a case involving a surgical sponge retained following an aortic valve replacement. The surgical sponge was placed into the left ventricle to protect calcified debris from falling down into the left ventricular cavity.
