2019Rib fractures are present in approximately 10% of patients and flail chest, defined as three or more ribs fractured at two points, is present in 3–5% of patients admitted to a trauma center (Dehghan et al., J Trauma Acute Care Surg 76(2):462–468, 2014; Ziegler and Agarwal, J Trauma 37(6):975–979, 1994).

[Surgical stabilization of multiple rib fracture and flail chest].
Kyobu geka. The Japanese journal of thoracic surgery, 2006The experience of 14 cases with surgical stabilization of multiple rib fracture and flail chest was reported. They were 11 men and 3 women of 31 to 87 years of age. Paradoxical chest movement was noted in 10 patients. Thirteen of 14 patients successfully weaned from the ventilator less than 7 days after surgery.
