European Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.Abstract An oft‐overlooked aspect of Sartre’s concept of selfhood is his rejection of good faith and sincerity as normative ideals. We argue that Sartre’s paradoxical treatment of good faith – claiming both that it is a manifestation of bad faith and the antithesis of it – holds a key to understanding Sartre’s account of selfhood.

European Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.Abstract This paper argues for a reinterpretation of Hegel's internal critique of the master in his famous ‘Master–Slave Dialectic.’ Hegel argues that, in addition to the evident injustice suffered by the enslaved, the arrangement also undermines the master's own purposes.

In Defence of Oblique Intention
European Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.Abstract Recent work on lying has revived an old action‐theoretic category: oblique, or indirect, intention. I argue that some liars intend deception obliquely. Sneddon objects that this category is drastic and unjustified: it counts all foreseen side‐effects as intended. My response is that oblique intention is not mere foresight.
