A sea of birds: first bird population assessments in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionSeabirds and other insular birds are an important part of marine ecosystems and are increasingly threatened worldwide. Phenology, abundance, distribution, and breeding success are important baseline parameters needed to evaluate population ...

Description of Euchone anceps sp. nov. (Annelida: Sabellidae) from the Mediterranean Sea and Northeast Atlantic, with remarks on the difficulty of generic definition

open access: yesThe European Zoological Journal, 2017
The problem of the generic placement of some peculiar Mediterranean and Atlantic sabellids, showing a mixture of features found in the genera Euchone and Paradialychone, is addressed. Due to the high similarity to E.

Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

Survey of Surveys

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. In the current panorama of large surveys, the vast amount of data that are obtained with different methods, data types, formats, and stellar samples prevents an efficient use of the available information. Aims. The Survey of Surveys is a project to critically compile survey results into a single catalog to facilitate the scientific use of the ...

The Caenorhabditis elegans DPF‐3 and human DPP4 have tripeptidyl peptidase activity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) family comprises serine proteases classically defined by their ability to remove dipeptides from the N‐termini of substrates, a feature that gave the family its name. Here, we report the discovery of a previously unrecognized tripeptidyl peptidase activity in DPPIV family members from two different species.

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...
