Does having bad epilepsy make you a good surgical candidate? A number needed to treat analysis

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Epilepsy surgery is an established treatment for drug‐resistant epilepsy, offering a realistic prospect of seizure freedom in well‐selected candidates. However, surgery is sometimes offered to individuals with a low probability of seizure freedom when it is framed as potentially “life‐saving” on the basis of the elevated mortality associated ...

HOW ARE EMOTIONAL PERCEPTS RECOGNIZED? CORRELATION BETWEEN PRIMING EFFECTS AND ERP COMPONENTS COULD INDICATE CONTRIBUTION OF SEMANTIC MEMORY AND VERBAL LANGUAGE

open access: yesSignum: Estudos da Linguagem, 2016
A research body using cerebral electrophysiology has revealed that affective prosody yelds context effects on emotion recognition in priming paradigm (inconguence prosody-face produces higher peaks of N400, an ERP associated to semantic integration of ...

General Framework for Multi‐Degree‐of‐Freedom Stiffness Matrix Updating for Iterative Solution Algorithms in Hybrid Simulation

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Iterative solvers are advantageous for handling nonlinear structural analysis problems. The iterative solvers often require updating the stiffness matrix, which limits their application in static and pseudo‐dynamic hybrid simulations because: (1) updating the stiffness matrix of a system involving a physical specimen is challenging; (2 ...

Of Dreams, Demons, and Whirlpools: Doubt, Skepticism, and Suspension of Judgment in Descartes's Meditations

open access: yes, 2021
I offer a novel reading in this dissertation of René Descartes’s (1596–1650) skepticism in his work Meditations on First Philosophy (1641–1642). I specifically aim to answer the following problem: How is Descartes’s skepticism to be read in accordance with the rest of his philosophy?

Interpretable Tree‐Based Models for Predicting Short‐Term Rockburst Risk Considering Multiple Factors

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
Interpretable tree‐based models integrate microseismic, geological, and mining indicators to predict short‐term rockburst risk. SHAP analysis reveals the dominant role of energy‐related features and clarifies nonlinear factor interactions, enabling transparent and reliable early‐warning in deep coal mines.

Mass culture of equine synovial fluid‐derived mesenchymal stromal cells using nonwoven polyethylene terephthalate fabrics

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Culture protocols need to yield 100 million equine synovial fluid (SF)‐derived mesenchymal stromal cells (SF‐MSCs) in around 3 weeks are needed, before these cells can be evaluated as agents of articular repair in clinical trials. Objectives To investigate mass culture of equine SF‐MSC culture protocols using nonwoven polyethylene ...

Anthropologist, heal thyself: Toward an anthropology of healing through relational interbeing

open access: yesFeminist Anthropology, EarlyView.
Abstract I call for an anthropology that confronts its own woundedness. Anthropologists often bear witness to suffering but rarely examine how our own grief, trauma, and institutional distress shape the affective tone of our work. Drawing on fieldwork with Runa (Quechua) women affected by forced sterilization in Peru and guided by my collaborator and ...

“I need to take care of myself as well”—self‐care strategies of abortion acompañantes in Northern Mexico

open access: yesFeminist Anthropology, EarlyView.
Abstract This ethnographic study explores the emotional labor and self‐care strategies of feminist abortion acompañantes in Northern Mexico. Operating within restrictive legal environments, acompañantes provide crucial support for self‐managed medication abortions (SMAs), engaging in significant, often invisible, emotional labor.

Full Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Ahead: Leveraging Immersive Virtual Reality to Create Equitable and Transformative Learning Experiences

open access: yesFuture in Educational Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Immersive virtual reality (IVR) is widely promoted as a means of enriching learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), yet evidence of its capacity to foster equitable classroom experiences for marginalised groups remains limited, particularly outside traditional STEM domains.

Sometimes Hot, Sometimes Not: The Relations Between Selected Situational Vocational Interests and Situation Perception

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Personality, EarlyView., 2020
Abstract Vocational interests are traditionally conceived as stable preferences for different activities. However, recent theorizing suggests their intraindividual variability. This preregistered experience sampling study examined intraindividual variation in selected vocational interests states and related situation and person factors (N = 237 ...
