Global Carbon Investment in Terrestrial Biological Nitrogen Fixation

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 40, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Biological nitrogen (N) fixation (BNF) provides the N needed to produce proteins and other biological building blocks, helping feed humanity and mitigate climate change. Due to its high energetic cost compared to other forms of N acquisition, biotic investment in BNF indicates N limitation. Globally gridded BNF flux data provide an opportunity

Wood anatomical trait correlations with hydraulic efficiency and safety in an aseasonal wet tropical forest

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 8, Page 2701-2717, August 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Xylem anatomy underpins the capacity of trees to transport water while avoiding hydraulic failure, shaping species performance and resilience to climate change. However, the specific ways anatomical traits underpin hydraulic trade‐offs in tropical forests remain debated.

Characterizing the SASP‐Dependent Paracrine Spreading of Senescence Between Human Brain Cell Types

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 8, August 2026.
In this paper, we characterized the brain cell‐type‐specific SASP and defined the directionality of a paracrine spreading of senescence phenotypes. We unraveled ligand‐receptor pairs underlying this spreading and showed that inhibiting this interaction ameliorates senescence dissemination.

Patient‐reported outcomes, postoperative pain and pain relief after day‐case surgery (POPPY): short‐term peri‐operative analgesic use

open access: yesAnaesthesia, Volume 81, Issue 8, Page 1057-1067, August 2026.
Summary Introduction An increasing proportion of complex surgical procedures are being performed in the UK as day‐cases, with variable and limited follow up. Discharge prescriptions must provide adequate analgesia, while considering the safety of the patient and public, following best practice guidance and good opioid stewardship.

Left Internal Thoracic Artery versus Saphenous Vein Grafts to Left Anterior Descending Artery after Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

open access: yesLife
Background: This study compared perioperative outcomes and long-term survival of saphenous vein grafts (SVGs) versus left internal thoracic artery (LITA) to left anterior descending artery (LAD) in isolated coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG ...

Mandibular Overdentures on Four Immediately Loaded Mini‐Implants Versus Two‐Delayed Loaded Regular Implants: 1‐Year, Two‐Center RCT on Patient‐Reported Outcomes

open access: yesClinical Oral Implants Research, Volume 37, Issue 8, Page 983-993, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Objective This one‐year randomized clinical trial compared the effects of mandibular implant‐overdentures (IODs) on two two‐piece regular‐neck tissue‐level implants (Group A) or on four mini‐implants (Group B) with different loading protocols in edentulous patients concerning dental Patient‐Reported Outcomes (dPROs).

Protein STM3547 From Salmonella typhimurium Is a Phosphofructose Kinase B‐Type Enzyme With Ribose Kinase Activity

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 126, Issue 2, Page 129-144, August 2026.
The metabolism of ribose starts with the phosphorylation of its 5′ hydroxyl group. Salmonella typhimurium has two kinases that perform this function, namely ribose rinase (RbsK) and deoxyribose kinase (DeoK). Here we report a new ribose kinase that we named RikA. The illustration was partially created in BioRender.
