Colony site selection in bank swallows [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
Bank Swallow colony site selection was studied on a 6,129 hectare area in the Qu'Appelle Valley near Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan. Comparison of 60 banks used by Bank Swallows with the 349 unused sites showed that taller, vertical, more recently ...

Effects of DON injection on the real number of swallows triggered by SLN (or ST) stimulation.

open access: yes, 2015
The real number of swallows recorded is indicated as mean ± sem. For each dose of DON injected, mean values of swallows recorded at a time when a robust inhibitory effect of swallows was noted; except for 60ng/kg DON dose which did not modify the number ...

Developing Metal–Polyphenol Network‐Based Single‐Protein Particle Encapsulation System for Sustained Release of Whey Protein to Mitigate Sarcopenia

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sarcopenia has emerged as a major health challenge in the aging population. Developing a sustained‐release system for whey protein may enhance its effectiveness in mitigating sarcopenia. Herein, a novel “single‐protein particle encapsulation” (SPPE) system is developed to protect whey protein and control its release.

Grit ingestion by nestling Tree Swallows and House Wrens

open access: yes, 1986
We examined the stomach contents of 200 Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) and 187 House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) nestlings for grit. Grit, composed mainly of small stones, sand, and mollusk shells or fragments, was found in 35% of the swallow and 31 ...

Bio‐Inspired Internal Stress Engineering for Microscale Surface Cracking in Sensitive Strain Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a bio‐inspired internal stress engineering strategy to fabricate highly sensitive crack‐based strain sensors. By harnessing the internal expansion energy of microspheres and the thickness‐dependent brittle‐to‐ductile transition of ultrathin gold films, tunable microscale cracks are generated.

Swallows Holding as It Is: The Distortion of National Muffler [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
I like big ideas. The opportunity to work with them, and hopefully to add to them, is one of the joys of academic life. But perspective also is required. Not everything genuinely presents macro issues.

Respiratory muscle training outcomes on swallowing biomechanics and respiratory function measures in normal subjects

open access: yesRevista CEFAC
Purpose: to verify the outcomes of respiratory muscle training (RMT) with flow-oriented incentive spirometer on respiratory function measurements and their relationship with the swallowing biomechanics variables.

Bio‐Inspired Gradient Heterogeneous Architectures for Ultrasensitive and Robust Strain Sensors via Programmable Crack Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by the insect campaniform sensillum, a heterogeneous bilayer strain sensor is developed based on a unique impedance mismatch and three‐dimensional structural dynamic percolation strategy. The sensor enables real‐time multi‐joint teleoperation of three joints and the gripper using a six‐degree‐of‐freedom robotic‐arm platform.
