A satellite swarm for radio astronomy

Acta Astronautica, 2014
Abstract At present the celestial sky has been mapped in considerable detail for every major wavelength band, except for the ultra-long radiowave band. A space-based interferometer consisting of a swarm of satellites would make it possible to map the celestial sources of 0.1–10 MHz radiation.

Thermospheric densities for the Swarm satellite mission

2021
<p>The European Space Agency (ESA) Swarm mission was launched in November 2013 and consists of three identical satellites flying in near-polar orbits. One satellite is flying at about 515 km, while the other two satellites are flying side-by-side at lower altitudes, starting at 480 km altitude and slowly descending due to atmospheric drag

On the origin of satellite swarms

Acta Astronautica, 2011
For a species to develop in nature basically two things are needed: an enabling technology and a ‘‘niche’’. In spacecraft design the story is the same. Both a suitable technology and a niche application need to be there before a new generation of spacecraft can be developed.

Satellite Traffic Simulation for RPAS Swarms

2019 IEEE 5th International Conference Actual Problems of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Developments (APUAVD), 2019
The continuously growing impact of Remotely Piloted Air Systems (RPAS) on our everyday lives is explained by their rapidly expanding application spheres. In some of those applications several vehicles working synchronously, i.e. RPAS swarm, may provide more benefits in comparison with a single vehicle.

Monitoring ionospheric gradients using SWARM satellite data

2023
The Swarm data products are well-suited to address a number of crucial topics for space weather science and monitoring, such as investigating spatial and temporal characteristics of ionospheric irregularities or improving topside approaches in ionospheric models for monitoring and forecasting the dynamics of the geo-plasma environment.

Collective trajectory planning for satellite swarm using inter-satellite electromagnetic force

Acta Astronautica, 2014
Abstract The inter-satellite electromagnetic force presents several significant advantages that help to expand its space applications to the multi-satellite missions gradually. For a satellite swarm, whether the electromagnetic force is applied to enable collective maneuver and how to provide a better performance and broader applications for such ...

Command and Control of UAV Swarms via Satellite

2018
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are attracting an increasing interest from both the industrial and the research fields, because of the large number of scenarios and applications that they can support. One of the big challenges of the next future is the use of UAV swarms, in order to exploit the advantages that coordinated actions of multiple drones can

Europe launches a Swarm of satellites

Physics World, 2014
Three identical satellites are now orbiting our planet as part of a mission to unlock the secrets of how the Earth's protective magnetic field is generated and why it changes over time.

Asynchronous Swarm Structural Optimization of Satellite Adapter Ring

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 2012
The shape and size of a satellite adapter ring are optimized in this paper using particle swarm optimization and an in-house finite element program. For a realistic high-fidelity modeling of the adapter ring, a commercial preprocessor is used. However, optimization of a high-fidelity model inevitably involves longer computation time; therefore ...
