In Standing, Corticospinal Excitability Is Proportional to COP Velocity Whereas M1 Excitability Is Participant-Specific

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2018
Reductions in the base of support (BOS) make standing difficult and require adjustments in the neural control of sway. In healthy young adults, we determined the effects of reductions in mediolateral (ML) BOS on peroneus longus (PL) motor evoked ...

Analysis of postural sway in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus: effects of shunt implantation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Medical Research, 2009
Poor postural balance is one of the major risk factors for falling in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Postural instability in the clinic is commonly assessed based upon force platform posturography.

Necessity of Proper Lashing of Containers on the Ship's Deck as Part of Optimization of the Sea Voyage

open access: yesPromet (Zagreb), 2004
These days we are witnessing an increase of container trafficin general and at sea in particular. In order to economizetheir business the ship owners are building bigger container vesselswhich can carry up to 8000 TEUs (Maersk line) and otherbig carriers

An Inexpensive 6D Motion Tracking System for Posturography

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2018
Computerized posturography is most often performed with a force plate measuring center-of-pressure (COP). COP is related to postural control actions but does not monitor the outcome of those actions, i.e., center-of-mass (COM) stability.

Optimizing successful balance recovery from unexpected trips and slips

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanical Science and Engineering, 2018
Approximately one in three people over 65 years of age fall each year. The resulting physiological and psychological trauma can lead to physical deconditioning, social isolation and early mortality.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Voluntarily controlled but not merely observed visual feedback affects postural sway [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
Online stabilization of human standing posture utilizes multisensory afferences (e.g., vision). Whereas visual feedback of spontaneous postural sway can stabilize postural control especially when observers concentrate on their body and intend to minimize

Dual PI3K/AKT and CDK4/6 inhibition reveals selective sensitivity in an SHH medulloblastoma stem cell model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Targeted therapy was evaluated in SHH medulloblastoma using neuroepithelial stem cell (NES) and tumor‐derived NES‐like (tNES) models in 2D monolayers and 3D spheroids. PI3K, AKT, and CDK4/6 inhibitors had minimal effects in NES but markedly reduced viability and growth and induced apoptosis in tNES cells, revealing distinct therapeutic vulnerabilities.
