Composting of separated solid swine manure
Journal of Environmental Science and Health . Part A: Environmental Science and Engineering and Toxicology, 1993Abstract A study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of the composting process when the initial moisture content is higher than the generally recommended limit of 65%. Solids separated from swine manure with very high moisture content were composted in small reactors with and without the addition of bulking agent.

Nitrogen Carryover from Swine Manure
2005Swine manure or commercial fertilizer had been fall applied for the prior year(s) crop. Late spring soil nitrate tests and crop yield for the current year were collected to determine the value of nitrogen carryover.

MANURE VALUE AND LIVEWEIGHT SWINE DECISIONS
1996Produced as a joint product, economic theory suggests that manure value could influence livestock management decisions such as herd size and optimal market weights. This study examines the concept of manure and its connection with optimal replacement age or market weight.

Co-composting of swine mortalities with swine manure and sawdust
Compost Science & Utilization, 2015AbstractThe treatment of livestock fatalities caused by epidemic diseases must be timely. Simultaneously, the contaminated excreta and bedding materials must also be treated on site without removal. The composting of manure with bulking materials is widely used on the farm, and the temperature during the composting reaches over 60°C under appropriate ...

Impacts of swine manure pits on groundwater quality
Environmental Pollution, 2002Manure deep-pits are commonly used to store manure at confined animal feeding operations. However, previous to this study little information had been collected on the impacts of deep-pits on groundwater quality to provide science-based guidance in formulating regulations and waste management strategies that address risks to human health and the ...

Integrated process for anaerobically digested swine manure treatment
Bioresource Technology, 2019An integrated three-step process was proposed for the treatment of the anaerobically digested swine manure (ADSM). The flocculation and struvite precipitation were used as the pre-treatment to remove the particles and reduce phosphorus to balance the condition for the algae growth.

Advanced swine manure treatment and utilization in Brazil
Bioresource Technology, 2009Animal production has changed from subsistence to an industrial model, lowering production costs but giving rise to higher potential environmental impact. When the effluents are not correctly managed, serious pollution events can occur. In Brazil liquid manure is commonly stored in reception pits or covered lagoons (biodigestors), followed by land ...

Free Fatty Acids and Sterols in Swine Manure
Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part B, 2006Free fatty acids and sterols were assessed in fresh manure and anaerobic lagoon sludge from swine production facilities in North Carolina. Eight free fatty acids and five sterols were identified and quantified in both manure and sludge samples.

Examination of the Aerobic Microflora of Swine Feces and Stored Swine Manure
Journal of Environmental Quality, 2016Understanding antibiotic resistance in agricultural ecosystems is critical for determining the effects of subtherapeutic and therapeutic uses of antibiotics for domestic animals. This study was conducted to ascertain the relative levels of antibiotic resistance in the aerobic bacterial population to tetracycline, tylosin, and erythromycin.

Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Recovered from Swine Manure
Microbial Drug Resistance, 2019Recently, concerns have been raised about the possibility of Acinetobacter baumannii transmission between animals and humans. So far, A. baumannii has been reported in animals with which people can come into contact. The presence of this pathogen in animal manure presents an equally important public health risk.
