Laboratory studies of aerobic stabilization of swine waste

Pig waste was allowed to accumulate in a pit beneath a slatted-floor swine finishing building for one week or one month. Samples of this waste were brought to the laboratory for analysis and aerobic stabilization. It was concluded that adding the raw waste continuously to the aeration unit gave the best results.

Ozonation of Swine-waste Liquids at Full-scale

Ozone has been shown to ameliorate the odor of swine waste during storage. Technical and economic considerations make it difficult to exploit this phenomenon at full scale. This paper describes the construction and start-up of a plant that treats about half of the waste from a 200-sow farrow-to-finish facility.

Abstract Degradation of organic matter of swine waste is dependent on the metabolic activity of the indigenous microorganisms. Although the composition of the centrifuged wastes varied, a reduction of about 80% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) was obtained in each case when incubated at 37°C and 250 rpm without pH control.

Microbiological aspects of ammonia oxidation of swine waste

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were present at 102 MPN/mL (most probable number per millilitre) in swine waste, and they were outnumbered by a factor of 105 by the heterotrophs of the indigenous flora. To study these ammonia-oxidizing bacteria we attempted to isolate them in pure culture.
