High Throughflow StreamVane Swirl Distortion Generators: Design and Analysis

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2023
Abstract In recent years, the StreamVane technology has developed into a mature and streamlined process that can reproduce swirl distortion for ground-test evaluation of fan and compressor performance and durability. A StreamVane device consists of complex turning vanes that accurately output a distorted secondary velocity field at a ...

Compressor Performance and Operability in Swirl Distortion

Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2010
Inlet swirl distortion has become a major area of concern in the gas turbine engine community. Gas turbine engines are increasingly installed with more complicated and tortuous inlet systems, like those found on embedded installations on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Computational Inlet Swirl Distortion Investigation of a High-Speed Compressor

AIAA Scitech 2021 Forum, 2021
Aero gas turbine engines are commonly supplied with straight-flowing air into the compressor, but recent high-efficiency aircraft configurations, such as Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI), distort the flow of air into the engine. BLI turns the flowing air, causing flow angularity or swirl distortion.

Quantification of Swirl Distortions Caused by S-shape Inlet Ducts

Proceedings of Global Power & Propulsion Society, 2022
The S-shape inlet is generally the main reason for the occurrence of swirl inlet distortion that is seriously concerned by the manufactures of fighters. The non-uniform inlet combined with large-scale bulk swirl, small-scale tight-wound swirl, or both of them may greatly impact the performance of aero-engines.

Design of a Nonreacting Combustor Simulator With Swirl and Temperature Distortion With Experimental Validation

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2013
Nonuniform combustor outlet flows have been demonstrated to have significant impact on the first and second stage turbine aerothermal performance. Rich-burn combustors, which generally have pronounced temperature profiles and weak swirl profiles, primarily affect the heat load in the vane but both the heat load and aerodynamics of the rotor.

Investigation of Plenum Inlet Distortion and its Impact on Compressor Total Pressure and Swirl Distortion

Volume 2: Aircraft Engine; Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels; Cycle Innovations, 2013
Aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) compressors experience a wide range of total pressure and swirl distortion levels as a result of the APU inlet geometry and different flight conditions and wind directions. Compressors are designed to operate with certain levels of distortion while avoiding surge and stall and maintaining acceptable stress levels ...

Numerical Simulation on the Vortex Shedding From Airfoils of a Swirl Distortion Generator

Volume 2D: Turbomachinery — Multidisciplinary Design Approaches, Optimization, and Uncertainty Quantification; Radial Turbomachinery Aerodynamics; Unsteady Flows in Turbomachinery, 2021
Abstract The StreamVane™ swirl distortion generator, developed by Virginia Tech, can efficiently reproduce the boundary layer of an airframe or duct found in boundary layer ingesting (BLI) aircraft. Due to manufacturing limitations, the vanes within StreamVanes induce unsteady, vortical wakes, commonly known as a von Karman vortex street.
