Nonlinear Destructive Interaction between Wind and Wave Loads Acting on the Substructure of the Offshore Wind Energy Converter: A Numerical Study

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
Even though the offshore wind industry’s growth potential is immense, the offshore wind industry is still suffering from problems, such as the large initial capital requirements. Many factors are involved, and among these, the extra costs incurred by the

The Alfvénic nature of chromospheric swirls [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Context. Observations show that small-scale vortical plasma motions are ubiquitous in the quiet solar atmosphere. They have received increasing attention in recent years because they are a viable candidate mechanism for the heating of the outer solar ...

1/f noise on the brink of wet granular melting

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
The collective behavior of a two-dimensional wet granular cluster under horizontal swirling motions is investigated experimentally. Depending on the balance between the energy injection and dissipation, the cluster evolves into various nonequilibrium ...

Single Nanoparticle Tracking Reveals Efficient Long-Distance Undercurrent Transport in Upper Fluid of Bacterial Swarms

open access: yesiScience, 2019
Summary: Flagellated bacteria move collectively in a swirling pattern on agar surfaces immersed in a thin layer of viscous “swarm fluid,” but the role of this fluid in mediating the cooperation of the bacterial population is not well understood.

Definition of Swirl Function and Its Appliation to Identification Method of Swirling Motion

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series B, 2007
A method of identification of swirling motion, with swirl function defined in this paper, and its application are presented. Flow characteristic can be classified with eigenvalue of velocity gradient tensor, and complex eigenvalue indicates that flow is swirling motion. Here the imaginary part of the complex eigenvalue is defined as swirl function, and

Motion of Axisymmetric Magnetic Eddies with Swirl

open access: yesProcedia IUTAM, 2013
AbstractWe consider the motion of axisymmetric magnetic eddies with swirl in ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow. The magnetic field is assumed to be toroidal, while the velocity field has both toroidal and poloidal components. The contour-dynamics formu- lation by Hattori and Moffatt (2006) for the case without swirl is extended to include swirl ...

Comparisons of LES and RANS Computations with PIV Experiments on a Cylindrical Cavity Flow

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2013
A comparison study on the numerical computations by large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods with experiment on a cylindrical cavity flow was conducted in this paper.

Shannon Entropy-Based Wavelet Transform Method for Autonomous Coherent Structure Identification in Fluid Flow Field Data

open access: yesEntropy, 2015
The coherent secondary flow structures (i.e., swirling motions) in a curved artery model possess a variety of spatio-temporal morphologies and can be encoded over an infinitely-wide range of wavelet scales.

The Swirl Motion of Vertical Bubbling Jet in a Cylindrical Vessel.

open access: yesISIJ International, 1992
Swirl motions of a bubbling jet in a cylindrical bath with centric bottom gas injection were investigated. The swirl motions were classified into two kinds. One was observed when the bath depth HL was nearly equal to the bath diameter D or less than that, while the other occurred for HL/D≥2.
