Abstract The smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) is typically considered an oceanic species and is only rarely observed in the cooler coastal waters of the northeastern Atlantic. On 20 December 2024, a juvenile S. zyganea was captured at 25 m depth in the inner Ría de Pontevedra (Rías Baixas, northwest Spain).

Beyond fishing: loggerhead turtle impalement by swordfish
Sea turtles are susceptible to a wide range of impacts. In Brazil, the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) is the main sea turtle species caught incidentally by longline fishing fleets that target the blue shark Prionace glauca (Linnaeus,

Killer Whales in the Central Tropical Pacific: Occurrence, Resightings, Morphology, and Acoustics
ABSTRACT Compared to their well‐studied coastal temperate counterparts, killer whales (Orcinus orca) in tropical‐subtropical and oceanic areas are under‐documented. We used sighting, photo‐identification, and acoustic data of killer whales in the central tropical Pacific (CTP), collected from multiple platforms between 2002 and 2023, to assess their ...

Abstract Galeaspids are an extinct group of jawless fishes from the Silurian–Devonian of China and northern Vietnam that are key to understanding the origin of vertebrate anatomical innovations. A new eugaleaspid, Bataspis crux gen. et. sp. nov., is described based on fossil material from the Lochkovian (Early Devonian) Xishancun Formation of Qujing ...

Multi-genetic marker approach and spatio-temporal analysis suggest there is a single panmictic population of swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Indian Ocean. [PDF]
Genetic population structure of swordfish Xiphias gladius was examined based on 2231 individual samples, collected mainly between 2009 and 2010, among three major sampling areas within the Indian Ocean (IO; twelve distinct sites), Atlantic (two sites ...

Mercury and methylmercury bioaccessibility in swordfish
Concentrations of mercury (Hg) in swordfish (Xiphias gladius) present a food safety problem for many countries. This study analyses total Hg (t-Hg) concentrations in 27 samples of swordfish marketed in Spain in 2005 and in their bioaccessible fractions (soluble concentration in gastrointestinal medium), obtained after applying an in vitro digestion ...

The Occurrence of Microplastic Ingestion in Commercial Marine Fish in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia
ABSTRACT Microplastics are polymer‐based particle compositions of various toxic chemicals with size less than 5 mm. Due to their small size, microplastics can be ingested and accumulate in body tissues of organisms. This raises concerns about their toxicity being transferred to humans via food consumption.
