CONSUMPTION AS A SOCIAL STATUS SYMBOL IN STRUCTURALISM
The article looks at the basic theoretical concepts of the political economy of the sign (structuralism, postmodernity) and their development in the theory of power based on the work by J. Baudrillard ‘For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign’.

A polyelectrolyte complex‐based sorbent is produced by scalable, environmentally benign aqueous phase inversion. Its porous, LiCl‐ and GO‐integrated architecture enables hourly adsorption−desorption cycles at low relative humidity (RH < 30%). A large‐scale prototype achieves multicyclic, solar‐driven atmospheric water harvesting of 1.37 L kg−1 day−1 ...

Polymorph engineering in ErMnO3 enables low‐voltage, forming‐free threshold switching with tunable negative differential resistance. Conducting orthorhombic regions embedded in an insulating hexagonal matrix provide controlled Joule‐heating‐enhanced Poole–Frenkel transport. The hexagonal phase prevents excessive heating and breakdown.

2D Magnetic and Topological Quantum Materials and Devices for Ultralow Power Spintronics
2D magnets and topological quantum materials enable ultralow‐power spintronics by combining robust magnetic order with symmetry‐protected, Berry‐curvature‐driven transport. Fundamentals of 2D anisotropy and spin‐orbit‐coupling induced band inversion are linked to scalable growth and vdW stacking.

Adaptive Hydrogels With Spatiotemporal Stiffening Using pH‐Modulating Enzymes
The chemomechanical coupling in an adaptive hydrogel is studied to further the development of adaptive hydrogels. This coupling is achieved by embedding a pH‐modulating enzyme in a pH‐responsive hydrogel. The enzymatic reaction can be triggered locally, which generates a pH‐decreasing wave throughout the system, increasing the crosslinking density and ...

Photon Avalanching Nanoparticles: The Next Generation of Upconverting Nanomaterials?
This Perspective outlines the mechanistic foundations that enable photon‐avalanche (PA) behavior in lanthanide nanomaterials and contrasts them with emerging application spaces and forward‐looking design strategies. By bridging threshold engineering, energy‐transfer dynamics, and materials engineering, we provide a coherent roadmap for advancing the ...

Symbolic consumption and the social construction of product characteristics [PDF]
As recognized since long, consumption serving to signal social status, group membership, or self-esteem is a socially contingent activity. The corresponding expenditures are motivated mainly by the symbolic value they have for transmitting the signal ...
