Symbolic representation of neural networks

Computer, 1996
Neural networks often surpass decision trees in predicting pattern classifications, but their predictions cannot be explained. This algorithm's symbolic representations make each prediction explicit and understandable. Our approach to understanding a neural network uses symbolic rules to represent the network decision process. The algorithm, NeuroRule,

Symbolic modelling of database representations

Seventh International Symposium on Symbolic and Numeric Algorithms for Scientific Computing (SYNASC'05), 2005
The paper proposes a symbolic model for tackling the theoretical basis of the transformations between the relational database form and its XML representation. The model we propose aims at proving the consistency of such transformations, which are often used in software applications that process databases.

A “Symbolic” Representation of Object-Nets

In this contribution, we extend the concept of a Petri net morphism to Elementary Object Systems (Eos). Eos are a net-within-nets formalism, that is, we allow the tokens of a Petri net to be Petri nets again. This nested structure has the consequence that even systems defined by very small Petri nets have a quite huge reachability graph.

A symbolic representation of time series

Proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2005., 2006
Various representations have been proposed for time series to facilitate similarity searches and discovery of interesting patterns. Although the Euclidean distance and its variants have been most frequently used as similarity measures, they are relatively sensitive to noise and fail to provide meaningful information in many cases.

Symbolic representation of hyperspectral data

Applied Optics, 1987
We have developed a symbolic representation of hyperspectral data using the scale space techniques of Witkin. We created a scale space image of hyperspectral data from convolution with Gaussian masks and then a fingerprint that extracts individual features from the original data.

Symbolic representation of number in chimpanzees

Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2009
This paper aims to summarize the existing evidence for the symbolic representation of number in chimpanzees. Chimpanzees can represent, to some extent, both the cardinal and the ordinal aspect of number. Through the medium of Arabic numerals we compared working memory in humans and chimpanzees using the same apparatus and following the same procedure ...

The Interrelations of Alternatives in Symbolic Representation

International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, 1974
SummaryThis paper is a schematic attempt to synthesise a heterogeneity of therapeutic methods by specifying them in terms of a common framework of defining criteria. It characterises first a concept of code, regarded as more generic than the term language, the defining criteria of the framework and proceeds to classify speech and commonly used ...

Symbolic representation and manipulation of signals

ICASSP '87. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2005
This paper discusses the symbolic representation and manipulation of signals and signal processing operations in computers. Symbolic representation and manipulation of signals, in contrast to numerical representation and manipulation, is the manipulation of signal properties and signal descriptions, rather than the computation of signal values.

Symbolic representation of probabilistic worlds

Cognition, 2012
Symbolic representation of environmental variables is a ubiquitous and often debated component of cognitive science. Yet notwithstanding centuries of philosophical discussion, the efficacy, scope, and validity of such representation has rarely been given direct consideration from a mathematical point of view.
