(Dis)Similarities Between Non-symbolic and Symbolic Number Representations: Insights from Vector Space Model

open access: yes, 2022
In this study, we aim to investigate the (dis)similarities underlying non-symbolic and symbolic number representations using vector space model to derive language-based estimates, along with numerical ...

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Social gaze and symbolic skills in typically developing infants and children with autism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The aim of this thesis was to investigate, through two observational studies, the relation among social gaze, play and language in 27 typically developing infants (study 1) and 18 young children with autism (study 2).

Generalizing the SINDy approach with nested neural networks [PDF]

open access: yesESAIM: Proceedings and Surveys
Symbolic Regression (SR) is a widely studied field of research that aims to infer symbolic expressions from data. A popular approach for SR is the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems (SINDy) framework, which uses sparse regression to ...

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Patient therapy outcome modeling in cancer organoids is improved by cancer‐associated fibroblasts and organoid assembly convolution

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Patient‐derived organoids (PDOs) from pancreatic, colorectal, and gastric cancers were used to evaluate standard and experimental therapies. Incorporating cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) into organoid cultures improved patient therapy outcome prediction.

Convolution-based classification of audio and symbolic representations of music [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We present a novel convolution-based method for classification of audio and symbolic representations of music, which we apply to classification of music by style.

Trajectories of Symbolic and Nonsymbolic Magnitude Processing in the First Year of Formal Schooling. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Sensitivity to numerical magnitudes is thought to provide a foundation for higher-level mathematical skills such as calculation. It is still unclear how symbolic (e.g. Arabic digits) and nonsymbolic (e.g.

Connecting Macroscopic, Molecular, and Symbolic Representations with Immersive Technologies in High School Chemistry: The Case of Redox Reactions

open access: yesEducation Sciences, 2022
Redox reaction is a difficult concept to teach and learn in chemistry courses at the secondary level. Although the significance of connecting macroscopic, molecular, and symbolic levels of representation has been emphasized in the chemistry education ...
