SAWing on symmetry

Proceedings of the 1999 Congress on Evolutionary Computation-CEC99 (Cat. No. 99TH8406), 2003
In this paper we investigate the behavior of mutation-based evolutionary algorithms on highly symmetric binary constraint satisfaction problems. With empirical methods we study why and when these algorithms perform better under the stepwise adaptive weighting of penalties (SAWing) than under the standard penalty function.

Symmetry for the sake of symmetry, or symmetry for the sake of behavior?

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2002
Wynn suggests that the imposition of symmetry on stone tools is indicative of the evolutionary development of cognitive abilities of the tool makers, particularly that of creating mental images. I suggest that it is more likely indicative of the evolutionary development of the perceptual ability to detect resources for behavior of hand-held objects.

Symmetries Due to Symmetry

2007
Abstract Schur’s lemmas play a fundamental role in the analysis of the representations of groups and algebras. They are powerful tools for the construction of a complete set of irreducible representations of any group. We exploit the first of Schur ‘s lemmas to detem1ine the most general form that a dynamical system in JR.N can have if ...

Symmetry breaking symmetry

2008
Scarcely any term connects art and science more closely than symmetry. This was already a theme in ancient times, as is found in Vitruvius, for example. On the beach of an unknown island, a shipwrecked traveler finds neatly arranged geometric figures. Can he conclude from this that there is an intelligent creator (perhaps even a god)?

PSEUDOSPIN SYMMETRY: A RELATIVISTIC SYMMETRY IN NUCLEI

Challenges of Nuclear Structure, 2002
We briefly review the evidence that pseudospin symmetry is an SU(2) symmetry of the Dirac Hamiltonian.
