On Symmetry and Conserved Quantities in Classical Mechanics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper expounds the relations between continuous symmetries and conserved quantities, i.e. Noether's ``first theorem'', in both the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian frameworks for classical mechanics.

Titanium Suboxides Responsible for Electronic Anomaly Near Room Temperature in the Ti3C2Tx MXene

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Our multi‐technique study reveals that the near‐room‐temperature anomaly in Ti3C2Tx MXene is linked to titanium suboxide nanodomains, including Ti3O5, embedded within the MXene host. Their temperature‐driven transformation provides an alternative explanation to solvent‐ and swelling‐based models and offers new insight into the thermally activated ...

Aspects of Objectivity in Quantum Mechanics [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The purpose of the paper is to explore different aspects of the covariance of (mostly) non-relativistic quantum mechanics. First, doubts are expressed concerning the claim that gauge fields can be 'generated' by way of imposition of (local) gauge ...

Quantum Algebras and Integrable Boundaries in AdS/CFT [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This thesis studies quantum integrable structures such as Yangians and quantum affine algebras that arise in and are inspired by the AdS/CFT duality, with a primary emphasis on the exploration of integrable boundaries deeply hidden in the duality.

Dark matter and global symmetries

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2016
General considerations in general relativity and quantum mechanics are known to potentially rule out continuous global symmetries in the context of any consistent theory of quantum gravity.

Quantifying Subsurface Weak in‐Plane Magnetization of Mixed Phase BiFeO3 by Scanning Nitrogen Vacancy Magnetometry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We use scanning nitrogen vacancy magnetometry to directly image the weak in‐plane magnetic moments in mixed phase BiFeO3 at the nanoscale and quantify the local magnetic moments to be 18.8±2.0 μB/nm2 in the rhombohedral‐like phase and 1.5±0.6 μB/nm2 in the well‐known non‐magnetic tetragonal‐like phase.

Realism and objectivism in quantum mechanics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The present study attempts to provide a consistent and coherent account of what the world could be like, given the conceptual framework and results of contemporary quantum theory. It is suggested that standard quantum mechanics can, and indeed should, be

Noncommutative Spacetime Symmetries from Covariant Quantum Mechanics

open access: yesAdvances in High Energy Physics, 2017
In the last decades, noncommutative spacetimes and their deformed relativistic symmetries have usually been studied in the context of field theory, replacing the ordinary Minkowski background with an algebra of noncommutative coordinates.

Soft gravitons in the BFSS matrix model

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2023
BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large N limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing N nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are ...

Glissile Interphase Boundaries Enable Collective Phase Switching in Epitaxial Polar Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A triple point is identified in the phase diagram of low‐symmetry epitaxial BiFeO3 thin film along with an extended regime of phase competition associated with a flattened energy landscape. The electromechanical response is shown to be governed by correlated interphase‐boundary motion, including scale‐free avalanche dynamics characteristic of systems ...
