The QR decomposition and the singular value decomposition in the symmetrized max-plus algebra

SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, 1997
The basic max-plus algebra operations are \(x\oplus y=\max(x,y)\) and \(x\otimes y=x+y\) for \(x,y\in\mathbb{R}\cup\{-\infty\}\). These operations present some analogy with addition and multiplication in \(\mathbb{R}^+\) respectively. Clearly \(-\infty\) acts as a zero element for \(\oplus\). There is no inverse but the max-plus algebra can be extended

The QR Decomposition and the Singular Value Decomposition in the Symmetrized Max-Plus Algebra Revisited

SIAM Review, 2002
Summary: This paper is an updated and extended version of the authors' paper in SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 19, No. 2, 378-406 (1998; Zbl 0915.15014). The max-plus algebra, which has maximization and addition as its basic operations, can be used to describe and analyze certain classes of discrete-event systems, such as flexible manufacturing systems ...
