Rat heart GDNF: effect of chemical sympathectomy

Developmental studies indicate a role for GDNF in survival of motor, autonomic, and sensory neurons. However, no study attempted to demonstrate its participation in autonomic nerve regeneration. In this work, chemical sympathectomy by 6-hydroxydopamine provided the model for assessing heart GDNF expression during denervation and axonal regrowth.

[Chemical lumbar sympathectomy].

After an account of historical facts the authors describe the technique of chemical lumbar sympathectomy. A 7.5% phenol solution in glycerol was used (7.5 ml). At the Surgical Clinic of the Institute for Postgraduate Medical Training of the Regional Hospital with Policlinic in Ostrava chemical lumbar sympathectomy was performed in 22 patients.

Chemical sympathectomy of the dog bladder produced by intra-aortic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine has been shown to increase the slope of the pressure/volume curve obtained by rapid fill cystometry. The volume threshold for eliciting a bladder contraction was decreased, whereas the pressure threshold did not change.

Chemical Sympathectomy with Phenol for Chronic Prostatic Pain

A case of chronic prostatitis where conventional chemotherapy and repeated transurethral resections failed to relieve pain is described. A cutaneous uretero-entero anastomosis was performed for troublesome pain and incontinence and only a permanent sympathetic block with phenol at the level of L4 achieved complete pain relief.
