A fuzzy integrated virtual synchronous machine based STATCOM replicating synchronous condenser

2021 8th International Conference on Signal Processing and Integrated Networks (SPIN), 2021
This paper is presented with a STATCOM connected grid system operating as VSM injecting reactive power into the grid. The controller of the STATCOM is modeled with virtual inertia introduced for the static module to replicate a dynamic synchronous machine.

Synchronous Condensers: Design and Testing

Waterpower '99, 1999
This paper describes the mechanical design of tailwater depression systems to permit synchronous condensing operation of large Kaplan turbine-generators at The Dalles and John Day hydroelectric projects of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A conventional air receiver based system was provided for the John Day turbines while a novel “Back to Back ...

Synchronous Condensers: Installation & Operation

Waterpower '99, 1999
The concept of operating several existing hydrogenerators at The Dalles and John Day Dams for synchronous condensing was proposed by Bonneville Power Administration in 1997, and was studied, tested, designed and installed by contract by mid-April, 1998. Ten units were modified, and were run as condensers from April to November, 1998.

Modern synchronous condenser performance considerations

2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2011
Many transmission entities around the world are considering the use of modern synchronous condensers as part of their overall transmission solution. This paper explores the performance characteristics of synchronous condensers and provides reasons why this time-proven technology is now again seen as offering many beneficial characteristics to the ...

Outdoor Hydrogen-Ventilated Synchronous Condensers

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1929
Hydrogen is an excellent cooling medium for high-speed rotating electrical machinery. When it is substituted for air, a machine can be operated at a higher load with the same temperature rise and the windage loss is decreased to one-twelfth. Furthermore, since no oxidation can take place in this type of machine, the life of the insulation is increased ...

New synchronous condensers for Jeju Island

2012 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2012
Jeju Island has long been served by an HVDC link to the main Korean peninsula. A second HVDC link will soon be added and once this is complete, the original HVDC link will also be refurbished. Since its original installation, synchronous condensers have provided reactive power support to the HVDC converters. As part of the overall upgrades taking place
