Dynamic Performance Comparison of Synchronous Condenser and SVC
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2008In this paper, a comparison of the dynamic performance between a conventional synchronous condenser, a superconducting synchronous condenser, and a static Var compensator (SVC) is made in a grid setup by simulating different cases that affect the performance of reactive power compensation.

Transient Stability of Synchronous Condenser Co-Located With Renewable Power Plants
IEEE Transactions on Power SystemsDeployment of Synchronous Condensers (SynCons) has become one popular solution in accommodating large-scale renewable energy source (RES) for existing power systems. However, as a rotating device, SynCon may lose transient rotor angle stability caused by

Synchronous Condenser Applications: Under Significant Resource Portfolio Changes
IEEE Power and Energy Magazine, 2019California has a mandated renewables portfolio Standard (RPS) requiring that 33% of electricity retail sales be served by renewable energy resources by 2020, 60% by 2030, and 100% by 2045. Over the last 10 years, wind and solar have become the dominant renewable resources in California, with solar predominating in the last five years.

Permanent magnet synchronous condenser with solid state excitation
2015 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2015A synchronous condenser consists of a free-spinning wound-field synchronous generator and a field excitation controller. In this paper, we propose a synchronous generator that employs a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) instead of a wound-field machine. PMSGs have the advantages of higher efficiency and reliability.

Adrenaline for the grid [superconducting synchronous condenser]
IEEE Spectrum, 2006This paper presents a novel superconducting device that provides essential voltage support. A superconducting synchronous condenser is basically an electric generator that is optimized and operated to act like a capacitor or inductor, providing the grid with reactive power, an abstruse but absolutely vital element in any power system relying on ...
