This chapter deals with the development of model, simulation and hardware implementation of the synchronous motor (SM) drive under various operating conditions. In the modeling of vector-controlled PMSM drive, the complete model of the SM drive system is developed for different types of speed controllers with a view to improving the performance of the ...

Starting Performance of Synchronous Motors
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1927This paper deals with the theory underlying the starting performance of the salient-pole synchronous motor equipped with damper windings. The theory, while involving some approximations, is accurate enough for practical engineering calculations. Formulas are developed for the starting torque, pull-in torque and inrush.

Output control of synchronous motors
Proceedings of the 37th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. No.98CH36171), 2002A dynamic controller is derived for a synchronous motor in the case of angular position tracking, when inertia, friction coefficient, resistant torque and stator resistance are unknown or slowly varying. Moreover, we suppose that the angular velocity is not measured and its numerical evaluation is unsatisfactory. Simulations are presented.

Synchronous motors for ship propulsion
Journal of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1921SINCE the inception and development of the idea of electric ship propulsion, the question of the possibility of using synchronous motors for such service has often been raised. Such a motor could be designed for unity power factor with a resulting saving in cost, weight, and efficiency, of both motor and generator.

For large synchronous machines, the excitation is usually provided by a DC-fed field winding in the rotor. For small synchronous machines, however, this is undesirable, on the one hand because of the complications for supplying DC to the rotor (i.e. slip rings, rectifier), on the other hand because the smaller the dimensions, the less efficient a field

The synchronous motor has found application where a precise constant speed drive was required and especially where a number of machines must run in synchronism. A typical example is in textile mills. Disadvantages such as double excitation (an a. c. armature winding and a d. c.

Synchronous Converters and Motor-Generators
Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1905At the present time the alternating-current motor in a motor-generator set of 100-kw. capacity or more is practically always a synchronous motor; an induction motor is rarely used for this purpose. The reason for this is threefold: the lagging current taken by an induction motor makes the motor undesirable at the end of a long line; from an operating ...

Permanent magnet synchronous motors
COMPEL - The international journal for computation and mathematics in electrical and electronic engineering, 2008PurposeThis paper aims to apply a two‐axis model for accurate representation of the characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) of the interior type.Design/methodology/approachFor a three‐phase PMSM, it uses a voltage source inverter with six power transistors with independent switching and PSIM software with Matlab for checking, by ...
