Vasovagal syncope, also called neurocardiogenic syncope, is common with younger people. It results from an inappropriate, excessive autonomic reflex activity. In the elderly patient the syncope may be provoked by massage of the carotid bodies and is then known as carotid sinus syndrome. The pathogenesis of neurocardiogenic syncope is debated.

Exercise-induced vasovagal syncope
Heart Rhythm, 2014Several case studies have been published about vasovagal syncope after exercise occurring in young patients not suffering from structural heart disease. The present case is worth mentioning as sinus arrest leading to syncope has been successfully documented on electrocardiogram during exercise.

The nature of most syncopal episodes, previously unknown, was recently elucidated by new diagnostic techniques such as the use of the tilt test. The vasovagal syncope can be clinically diagnosed by means of the tilt test. The transitory loss of consciousness during prolonged orthostasis is typically associated with sudden hypotension and bradycardia ...

[Malignant vasovagal syncope].
Orvosi hetilap, 2003The diagnosis of epilepsy is complicated by various conditions that can mimic an epileptic seizure. Many patients with abnormal seizure activity during loss of consciousness may have cardiovascular syncope with global cerebral hypoxia (convulsive syncope), which may be difficult to differentiate from epilepsy on clinical grounds. The differentiation is,

Syncope is common in pediatric population, carrying a significant health and psychological impact. The incidence of syncope in the pediatric age that requires medical intervention is estimated at 125 of 100,000 subjects (0.125%). An incidence peak occurs around the age of 15 years, with females having more than twice the incidence of males.
