When the entire digital web space has been destroyed by burn scarring and there is a contracture of the volar aspect of the web as well as the dorsum, Z-plasties and skin grafts alone seldom produce a satisfactory web space. During the past 3 years, for the release of 46 contracted web spaces in 20 burned patients, we have turned a rectangular flap ...

LOCAL EPIDERMOPLASTY FOR SYNDACTYLY
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1991A new method of treating syndactyly is described. The fingers are separated by graduated steps in a special apparatus using skeletal fixation of the phalanges with wires. Skin grafting is then carried out. Scarring and deformity are avoided. The operation can be used for very young children and our patients were aged from 5 months to 30 years.

The experience gained through the management of 43 patients with syndactyly of the toes is presented. The incidence appears to be similar to that of syndactyly of the fingers. Type 1 syndactyly, or zygodactyly, always presented itself as a cosmetic problem; its correction is occasionally indicated and the procedure used is discussed. Type 2 syndactyly,

Summary A family showing a Mendelian dominant pattern of inheritance of syndactyly with lack of female penetrance is described. Previously recorded family histories of this condition were reviewed—no similar pattern was found. The possible mechanism of lack of female penetrance is discussed.

The operation to be described has been used by the author, with minor modifications, for over 10 years. A series of 57 cases is presented, all of which were simple, uncomplicated examples of syndactyly. The correction is based on separation of the cleft into rectangular flaps combined with removal of interdigital fat. Performed at one year, this allows
