Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Molecular and Genetic Basis of Non-Syndromic Tooth Agenesis

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Tooth agenesis represents the most common anomaly of dental development, which according to Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database, affects approximately 20% of the population.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Preferred Workflows for Syndromic Surveillance Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Workflows are a sequence of information processing operations that people carry out to meet certain in-formational goals [1]. Using various user-centered design (UCD) techniques we uncovered the workflows that epidemiologists wished to follow when using ...

A novel G21R mutation of the GJB2 gene causes autosomal dominant non-syndromic congenital deafness in a Cuban family

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2006
Deafness is a complex disorder affecting 1/1000 infants. In developed countries, more than 50% of deafness cases are thought to have a genetic cause. At least 40 loci for dominant non-syndromic deafness and another 30 for recessive non-syndromic deafness

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Evaluating syndromic surveillance systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Syndromic surveillance systems are commonly presented in the literature but few are rigorously evaluated. We present and test an evaluation framework to examine which events can and cannot be detected, the time to detection and the efficacy of different ...

Diagnostic implications of associated defects in patients with typical orofacial clefts

open access: yesJornal de Pediatria, 2015
OBJECTIVES: To describe prevalence of associated defects and clinical-genetic characteristics of patients with typical orofacial clefts seen at a reference genetic service. METHODS: Descriptive study conducted between September of 2009 and July of 2014.
